Highland,

This week, I am away at Jekyll Island with Truth Spring Academy students. Therefore, I will be concise. Got to get packed! I will be back Sunday, though.

To all who attended our first Listening Session – thank you! These sessions afford us the opportunity to go deeper. There’s another session this Sunday — in our Red-Brick Sanctuary, 9am. Childcare is provided - sign up in advance.

Thomas Findley did a terrific job sharing his testimony with us last Sunday. I was so proud of him – what courage! He also did a terrific job putting on display how Jesus is transforming his life. Let’s continue to love and support him, Highland.

This Sunday, we pick back up with our series through Matthew. We will work through the “final lap” of Matthew 14, then turn the corner, entering Matthew 15. Following the sermon, we will have someone make a public profession for Jesus, followed by their baptism. Join me in celebrating “newness of life” in this repentant soul.

Monday- Friday, 8:30-11:30 — The Highland Cafe’ is open. If you want to serve, please contact us. Or, if you want to stop by for a cup of coffee, you’re always welcome.

“My inmost being will exult when your lips speak what is right. Let not your heart envy sinners, but continue in the fear of the LORD all the day. Surely there is a future, and your hope will not be cut off” (Proverbs 23:16-18).

Let’s pray for our hearts, Highland. Here’s our guide. It offers direction on how we can pray for ourselves and for one another this week. There’s also some church-related information in the Prayer Guide – check it out.

sharing in christ together

As I consider Kathy’s testimony from last Sunday, I took away some profoundly strong points! Here are two of them:

  • Regarding motherhood: “The wife and mother influences the future of any society more than any other force. A wife encourages and supports her husband, who in turn, influences society. A mother nurtures her children in the laws of God, so they can be godly leaders of future generations.”

  • Regarding life in Christ: “I am striving to live to bring glory and honor to God. I know that I probably could have been successful, as the world defines success, without God, but oh, how EMPTY and meaningless my life would be. Jesus is the only one who could fill the void in my soul. In Him, I am complete.”

Unfortunately, her testimony was not recorded. We had a technical difficulty—our loss. Even still, thank you, Kathy! I hope we savor her points, Highland.

This Sunday, we carry on with testimonies. We will have Thomas Findley share how the Lord is at work in his life. As it stands, he will share in both Coffee and Conversation & our 10am Service.

Thanks, everyone!

thanks, agape feast team!

To those who served us all so joyously during the Agape Feast, thank you! I really appreciate your hospitable manner. So grateful that each of you also came to prep, plus stayed afterward to clean up. I love you.

Listening Session, 9am, in Red Brick Sanctuary.

Listening sessions begin this sunday

Begins this Sunday in Red-Brick Sanctuary, 9am

Hey y'all! It's Billy. I am excited to invite you to a series of gatherings this spring and summer at 9:00 AM on Sunday mornings. We are referring to them as “Listening Sessions.”

God has called each of us to this place for a purpose. And praise God, Highland is growing. We want to prayerfully consider new short term and long term goals for the church. Before we do that, we want to work through some questions together and gather some feedback. Come to any or all of the sessions! Here’s the plan:

- We will start and end each session with Scripture.

- I will facilitate guided questions and discussion on the present and the future of our Church.

- We will pray together.

- Childcare is provided - sign up in advance.

- We might have donuts!

- The times will be an encouragement to you, I promise!

This is an exciting season at Highland, and we want you to contribute! My prayer is that these sessions, as Rob outlines in our Prayer Guides, strengthen the strands of stewardship for our Church.

The dates for the sessions are listed below. The sessions are friendly to you if you can only come to one or if you can come to all six. Please make plans to attend any or all! Let me know if you have any questions. Note: We will meet in the old red brick sanctuary.

  • 4/26

  • 5/3

  • 5/10

  • 6/21

Prayer Guide

Highland, as we pray for North Highland this week — let us continue to work out our salvation, by drawing even nearer to the Lord, submissively. Abiding in Him, contentedly, will result in our own salvation outworking in fruitfulness and reverence. Those who do not know the Lord in our community (and throughout our lives) will taste of the sweetness of those fruits, tasting the goodness of the Lord.

A Testimony, The Lord’s Supper & Our Agape Feast This Sunday

I am enjoying our journey through the Gospel of Matthew! As we do life, may the currents of compassion flow through us, even through inopportune times. If you want to listen to the sermon, it has been posted on our website. Check out our Audio Page.

This Sunday, we continue with Testimonies. Together, we celebrate the life-giving work of Christ Jesus within the life of Highland Community Church. We have the privilege of hearing Kathy Lynch celebrate how the Lord has worked in her life this Sunday. Thank you, Kathy, for sharing how the Lord has ministered to you.

Also, we will hold the Lord’s Supper. We pause our Sermon Series to set our affections upon Jesus – the sacrificial lamb, the Lion of Judah. Let’s celebrate Jesus as we hold Communion, in remembrance of Him, Highland.

Following the Lord’s Supper, we will all enjoy our Agape Feast. Transition to the Dining Facility after Service. Let’s enjoy some time around the table together. Please note – let’s allow our van-riders to be served first so that the route can start just after they eat. Thank you!

Matthew 14 This Sunday.

our series through matthew

We return to our Sermon-Series this Sunday. We will pick up in Matthew 14, mid-chapter. It’s curious that Matthew places the execution of John the Baptist smack dab in the middle of his gospel. Reason being – there’s a case to be made that John the Baptist is the final voice of the Old Testament Prophets. As the OT prophets did, John the Baptist foretold of the coming Messiah, yet – beheld Him. With his passing, the old covenant falls into the shadows of the new covenant, which will continue to rise as the noon-day sun. This truth will become more evident as we proceed through Matthew’s gospel.

Our study will be through James. Our emphasis will be understanding Biblical Manhood, which James so accurately defines. Looking at the overview of our series, you see that we will fly over one chapter each of our five sessions.

Out of each chapter, we will highlight a quality of manhood James brings to light. If you want to join us, sign up using the form in this original post. See you tomorrow night, men. — Rob

Prayer Guide

Highland,

As we pray today, may our hearts savor the holiness of Christ Jesus, Highland. Let’s ask the Lord to give us a yielding agreeability with His Word, obeying His commands. As we yield, obeying His Word, we express a love for the Lord that transforms our lives!

What courage it takes to say “no” to sin and “yes” to the Lord’s commands! Taking that first step of faith, though, leads to the first taste of victory in Christ Jesus over the entangling-sin of our hearts. So rewarding!

Therefore, let’s ask the Lord to remain as Victor in our hearts as we journey with Him throughout our days, Highland! Let’s pray for one another, asking the Lord to deliver each other from sin, that we all may walk in His freedom.

See our Prayer Guide. If you are reading this in email-form, see the original post to access the Prayer Guide.

Looking forward to Celebrating Easter With You!

I just finished reading Tim Keller’s “The Reason for God.” In the book, Keller describes the character of Jesus. To skeptical readers, Keller describes Jesus this way:

“We are surprised to see tenderness without any weakness, boldness without harshness, humility without any uncertainty, accompanied by a towering confidence. Readers discover for themselves His unbending convictions but complete approachability, His insistence on truth but always bathed in love, His power without insensitivity, integrity without rigidity, passion without prejudice.”

Moving toward Easter, let’s consider the beauty of the heart of Jesus. As Keller describes, Jesus displays the fullness of life, yet, lays down His life, that we might come to know life eternal, in Him! Oh, Highland, that we may surrender our hearts, yielding to Jesus as Lord. It’s here, in this sweet-surrender to Jesus’ lordship, that we actually live!

Sunday’s Service will center upon us celebrating Jesus together. We will celebrate life-in-Christ. Through readings and through song, we will worship together. Following corporate worship, we will celebrate the love of Christ at work in the life of one another. There will be a testimony, plus two public confessions of salvation! I look forward to celebrating life-in-Christ together, Highland.

Robert Singleton takes the pulpit this sunday

This Sunday, Robert Singleton will take the pulpit. As we’ve concluded chapter 13 in our Series through Matthew, Robert’s offered to give me a breather. Robert does such a good job of teaching us how to put God’s Word into action, both in trusting God and obeying His Word. I look forward to being challenged to honor the Lord as he speaks to us, Highland —- thank you, Robert.

The tomb is empty. Let’s celebrate our Overcomer!

Easter Season Testimonies

Highland, we will hold an Easter egg hunt Easter Sunday (April 5th), just after service. We also enter into our testimony season, Highland. Kimberly Klaus quarterbacks this effort to celebrate the work of the Lord in the life of our church. See her post below:

“The Lord delights when His people share His glory. He tells us in Scripture in many different ways to not hide God's work, but to share of His faithfulness among the congregation of believers (Psalm 40:9-10), tell what He has done for your soul (Psalm 66:16), be His witnesses (Acts 1:8), and to tell of what the Lord has done for you (Mark 5:19). Revelation 12:11 even says we overcome the enemy by the blood of Jesus and the word of our testimony. There is power in declaring what God has done for us!

Yet it's so easy to get caught up in the day to day business of life, or to get caught up in the latest news cycle, that we fix our minds on these worldly things and they become the fruit of our words. Pause and think about it..how many days may we share our worries or concerns with others but not share about the goodness of God?

As you spend time in prayer this week, ask the Lord to remind you of where He has been faithful, compassionate, kind or powerful in your life. Ask Him to remind you of His provision, His grace, His mercies, and His protection, which have manifested in specific ways for you- whether this week or over the course of your life. Take note of what comes to mind, and consider sharing it with someone else! You will be encouraged, that person will be encouraged, and the Lord will be glorified.

Easter Sunday is coming in a few weeks, and there may be no better time to celebrate the Lord's work in one another's lives than during this season of celebrating the Resurrection of our Savior. As a Highland community, we want to offer a chance for you to share how God has worked in your life by opening up some testimony time on Sunday mornings. If you are interested in sharing on Easter Sunday, or one of the few Sundays following, please contact Kimberly Klaus or Rob Strickland so we can get you scheduled!” — Kimberly Klaus

Prayer Guide

Highland,

It was great seeing you all Sunday. During our Service, I mentioned that a man who has lived in North Highland for 57 years wrote us a note of thanks. He writes:

“God knows what He is doing. For He placed Highland here, in the Highland Community, to love and care for us; to lead our hearts and lives into the loving arms of Jesus. Thank you!”

Highland, this letter-of-thanks has been issued to each of us. As we pray for our church today, may we continue to bear a reputation of loving our neighbors in honor of our Lord. Know that I appreciate you, Highland. May the Lord’s name radiate with honor in the life of our church.

Prayer Guide

Highland,

As we pray today, we ask the Lord to fill our hearts and homes with His presence. In Proverbs 14, we learn that, when our hearts are submissive to the Lord, then our children find a refuge in His presence (Proverbs 14:26). Let’s approach the Lord, asking Him to teach our hearts to humbly revere Him, being grateful that, in His faithfulness, He fortifies us.

getting to know Andrew Cowart

I was born in Columbus, Georgia, to parents who were church planters. I quite literally grew up in the church that was planted in our living room. As I grew up in that environment, I learned to love the things of the Kingdom of God. I was raised in a community that shared celebrations and hardships, lived by the Word of God, and cared for our neighbors.

Those values deeply shaped me, so that I continue to seek the things of the Kingdom today. My personal mission statement is to draw attention to the Kingdom of God in every heart, place, and circumstance entrusted to me. I am excited about the hearts, places, and circumstances that I will encounter at Highland, and the Kingdom of God being revealed here. I could not be more grateful for the opportunity to live out this Kingdom mission among like-minded followers of Jesus. Thank you for welcoming me in!

The treats were so appreciated during accreditation — thank you!

Sunday Service Schedule Remains The Same This Sunday.

Sunday School - 9am

Sunday Service - 10am

Highland,

Big week for Truth Spring Academy this week!  Our ACSI Accreditation Review is underway. Officials are observing and reporting on how well we hold to best practices. Some of you, who have children at Truth Spring Academy, have participated in the Parent Cohort – thank you!  I appreciate your willingness to contribute toward the development of Truth Spring Academy.

To sum up the visit, the review is going really well!  We will not get an official report until May, but the Review Teams’ findings thus far have been favorable! A few of you have stopped by some much-appreciated treats throughout the week – so timely! Thank you for being so considerate of us!

If you were with us last Sunday, you had the opportunity to hear that we have hired Andrew Cowart to serve as Ministry Coordinator.  He has already proven to be such an asset to the daily life of our church!  If you have not met him, make a point to welcome him! To further clarify, he is part-time with Highland and part-time with Truth Spring.  His workload with Truth Spring will primarily fall within Truth Spring Trade School’s lane.  We all consider him to be such a welcomed addition to the team!

As we pray today, we pray through the first of our four Strands of Stewardship: Heart. Our hearts must harbor habits that align with the holiness of our Lord. Therefore, we must safeguard our hearts from entertaining evil in every way, Highland! Furthermore, as we pray, we are using Psalm 119 to guide us. Here’s the passage to which I am referring:

“You have dealt well with your servant, O LORD, according to your word. Teach me good judgment and knowledge, for I believe in your commandments. Before I was afflicted I went astray, but now I keep your word. You are good and do good; teach me your statutes” (Psalm 119:65-68).

This is the language of a repentant heart, which we referred to Sunday, during our sermon.  To learn more, give our Prayer Guide a glance. I invite you to join us as we pray and fast today, during our lunch hour. Let’s ask that our hearts be home to the holiness of our Lord by way of ‘keeping with the fruits of repentance’, yielding to Jesus as Lord.

I love you, Highland,

Rob
