Sunday School Session Concludes

We have concluded another session of study, Highland! Well done! To those who led us, thank you! I think I speak for all when I say that your commitment to preparation and to challenge us all to go deeper is appreciated.

To those who served in all other ways, know your work is invaluable within the life of Highland. How I appreciate your willingness to ensure all logistics are addressed thoroughly – both with care and thoughtfulness.

Highland, as we continue to go deeper, these Sunday School Sessions will remain a major roadway of discipleship for us. I want all of us to get involved! Let’s cultivate a church-culture that prizes growing in Christ and desires discipleship.

We must continue to stay together, study together and serve together, saturating the life of Highland with Scripture. Oh, Highland, may we place a supreme value on nourishing both our hearts and the hearts of one another with God’s Word.

Current sunday morning happenings

This Sunday, our service will be another blend of reflecting upon the life of Highland and taking another step through our Matthew-Series. We are nearing the end of the tenth chapter.

Last weeks’ service is available online through our audio page. Feel free to give it a listen. It’s a nice blend of the life of Highland. It includes most of David’s remarks, Carrie and me reflecting over the life of Highland, plus Carrie’s blessing over Highland!

It also includes the installment of our series through Matthew. How grateful I am that we, a band of sinners, in constant need of the Lord’s mercy, get to gather to glorify Him, supporting one another.

Our Text From Last Sunday

“Do not think that I have come to bring peace to the earth. I have not come to bring peace, but a sword. For I have come to set a man against his father, and a daughter against her mother, and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law. And a person’s enemies will be those of his own household. Whoever loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of me, and whoever loves son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me. And whoever does not take his cross and follow me is not worthy of me. Whoever finds his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life for my sake will find it” (Matthew 10:34-39).

Our Starting Text This Sunday

“Whoever receives you receives me, and whoever receives me receives him who sent me. The one who receives a prophet because he is a prophet will receive a prophet’s reward, and the one who receives a righteous person because he is a righteous person will receive a righteous person’s reward. And whoever gives one of these little ones even a cup of cold water because he is a disciple, truly, I say to you, he will by no means lose his reward” (Matthew 10:40-42).

Thanks, Jim!

Come, ready to eat October 19th.

A long time friend of Highland will be grilling for us October 19th. His name is Jim Money. He and some of his friends from Cross Pointe will be preparing and serving us, Highland, so we can concentrate on being together. Bring blankets and prepare to picnic along the front lawn, if it’s a nice day. Looking forward to celebrating with you the Lord’s abounding goodness.

Thanks for everything, Roger.

Roger Woodman Did So Much!

Roger Woodman has passed away. Roger and his wife, Cathy were devoted to the life of Highland Community Church for many years! They assisted in countless ways! They helped feed people who were hungry, get people to appointments and take care of the grounds of our church.

In the last few years, Roger has been in decline. James Sewell, who is part of his family, has been caring for Roger. James works for Truth Spring. He is also working out details for his passing. Keep an eye out for upcoming information, as it becomes available.

Continuing through Matthew

This week, as the Lord allows, we will wrap up our journey through Matthew, chapter ten. If not, then we will bring chapter ten in for a landing on October 12th. Once we conclude this chapter, we will take a few weeks off from our series through Matthew.

As a reminder, we will hold a Service of Remembrance on October 19th. We will take the time to reflect the faithfulness of our Lord and celebrate Him — for He has done great works in our midst, Highland.

Continuing through Matthew

Our series through Matthew has us in the tenth chapter. We see how the Chief Shepherd now calls to order and commissions the twelve to go seek the lost sheep of Israel. This commissioning, of course, is to fulfill the words spoken by the prophet, Ezekiel:

“I will seek the lost, and I will bring back the strayed, and I will bind up the injured, and I will strengthen the weak, and the fat and the strong I will destroy. I will feed them in justice” (Ezekiel 34:16).

I regret to report that last Sunday’s sermon was recorded. Some type of technical blunder on my end. I am sorry for any inconvenience that this may cause you. I will do my best to recap this upcoming Sunday.

This Sunday, we work through Jesus’ warning to avoid wolves, while telling His disciples to be “as innocent as doves and as wise as serpents.” I look forward to journeying through this portion of Matthew this Sunday, Highland.

Continuing through Matthew

Throughout chapter nine, Jesus declares Himself to be the Son of Man when He is speaking to the Scribes. As we work through the text, Matthew then gives us a glimpse into seeing how Jesus will forge this new covenant, forming a new dominion (as the Son of Man is understood to do). He will establish this new dominion in His own body and in His own blood.

In looking at this declaration, Jesus makes known to us that He’s not come to abolish the law, He has come to fulfill the law and the prophets. This small detail is very important. Let’s look back at Jesus’ statement in the Sermon on the Mount.

“Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them. For truly, I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not an iota, not a dot, will pass from the Law until all is accomplished.”

— Matthew 5:17-18

We continue to see that Jesus will meld together the law & the prophets in His ministry; thereby, in His own blood, satisfying the wrath of God. Anyone, therefore, who repents of their sin, declaring Jesus to be Lord will know salvation from the wrath of God through Jesus.

In Matthew 9:18-34, Jesus encounters and ministers to the Distinguished, the Destitute, the Demon Oppressed. As we started unpacking this passage last Sunday, we will continue through this text this upcoming Sunday, moving toward the tenth chapter. To listen to sermons in our series — click here.

Continuing through Matthew

As we continue to journey through the Gospel of Matthew, it is my hope that we continue to savor the beauty of the heart of Christ together! In reflecting upon last Sunday’s sermon, Jesus’ desire for mercy is a directive unto us all. He instructs us to consider our own sinful hearts and, in light of the Holy Spirit’s conviction, know our deep need for mercy.

Charles Spurgeon greatly elaborates upon points from last Sunday’s sermon. In light of coming face-to-face with our sinful-condition by way of the Holy Spirit’s conviction, Spurgeon refers to recognizing our need for mercy as being “poor in spirit.” In praying for the hard-hearted, he writes: “I know no greater mercy in that they might be blessed with spiritual poverty, that they might be made to feel how poor they are. For they will never know Christ and they will never rise to be practically merciful themselves till first they see their own true condition and have obtained mercy enough to lie down at the foot of the cross, and there, with a broken heart, confess that they are empty and poor.” So good!

We sought to learn what Jesus meant when he said: “I desire mercy, not sacrifice.” In closing, we placed a magnifying-glass over the word, mercy, making these points:

  • To desire mercy is to look at our heart.

  • To desire mercy means that we desire the Lord, Himself, because He is merciful.

In seeing the condition of our sinful hearts, then calling out to the Lord for mercy, we find our greatest delight is in being near Him! In being parched, aching in thirst, when someone gives us a drink of water, we savor every sip, taking refuge in the One who offered us the cup.

As we have received mercy, our aching hearts are calmed! We then are transformed by the Giver of mercy, only wanting to impart what mercy we have received unto all, that all may be comforted in His mercy. Highland, let us comfort others in mercy, as we are merely recipients of the Lord’s mercy. Feel free to listen — click here. This Sunday, we continue to work through Matthew 9 — looking forward to seeing you.

Continuing through Matthew

We concluded chapter eight in our series through Matthew last Sunday. In chapter eight, Matthew describes the crowds’ response to the Sermon on the Mount as being that they were astonished because Jesus taught as with one who has authority.

This is a monumental moment in the Gospel of Matthew. Jesus could have taken this moment and built his entourage right here! As a matter of fact, it was customary for rabbis to cultivate a following, leveraging influence to fuel their agendas. So, we find ourselves in the middle of this moment in the life of Jesus. Bearing authority of Heaven & Earth: What will Jesus do with His authority? Instead of building His entourage, Jesus ‘empties Himself’ (Philippians 2). He takes on the form of a servant, honoring His Father’s Name by ministering to:

  • The Outcasts (Matthew 8:1-4)

  • The Outsiders (Matthew 8: 5-13)

  • The Oppressed (Matthew 8:14-17)

The latter half of chapter eight affords us the opportunity to see how many will respond to the authority of Jesus. Thereby, we are also challenged, asking ourselves how we respond to the authority in His Name. These two questions, borrowed from N.T. Wright’s commentary, serve as a probe for our hearts:

  • Do we actually treat Jesus as if He has authority over every aspect of our lives?

  • Are we living in such a way that, even in the confrontation of evil, that others say of us – ‘what sort of people can they be?

Sermons are available to listen through the last three weeks, in which we covered chapter eight of Matthew. Feel free to listen — click here. This Sunday, we break open chapter nine together. Looking forward to seeing you Sunday!

thank you, Highland!

Highland – Truth Spring is privileged to have begun another academic year! The fact that we get to welcome our neighbors to be part of both Truth Spring Academy and Truth Spring Trade School would not be possible without your hospitality, Highland. Please continue to pray for us, as we direct students’ hearts toward the love and power of Jesus! Also, pray for Truth Spring’s leadership – that we may carry the name of the Lord honorably.

Community Bible Study

This is an enriching opportunity coming to Columbus! Talk to Kathy Jordan to get more details.

community bible study starting in columbus

Kathy Jordan has brought to my attention an exciting opportunity! Columbus is being afforded a Biblically-rich experience! Community Bible Study, which is a broad ministry, is opening a chapter locally. Furthermore, the study will be through the Gospel of Matthew!

As Kathy and I have discussed the content and I have also reviewed the material, it’s evident that this could prove to be such a meaningful time for community, study and growth! The Bible Study will be held at Christ Community Church, starting August 28th, at 9:30am. For more information, please click here, or, speak with Kathy Jordan.

To those who support this ministry, thank you! I appreciate you allowing us to be hospitable to our neighbors in the name of Christ.

So grateful for you, Highland.

I love you,
