Sin's Dominion Abolished!

Thomas is baptized.

Thomas is baptized.

“What should we say then? Should we continue in sin so that grace may multiply? Absolutely not! How can we who died to sin still live in it? Or are you unaware that all of us who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into His death? Therefore we were buried with Him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, so we too may walk in a new way of life. For if we have been joined with Him in the likeness of His death, we will certainly also be in the likeness of His resurrection. For we know that our old self was crucified with Him in order that sin’s dominion over the body may be abolished, so that we may no longer be enslaved to sin, since a person who has died is freed from sin’s claims” (Romans 6:1-7, HCSB).

Ezekiel 18: 1st Sermon Recap & Prayer Guide

Highland,

It was so great to be with you this past Sunday. Those of you who were unable to be with us, know that we missed you and we look forward to seeing you again soon.

As I mentioned Sunday, we are going to spend some time in the Old Testament for the next several weeks. I have personally been spending time in Ezekiel and Isaiah and I hope that we can glean and walk, together, from what the Lord has been teaching me in my personal time of study and prayer.

As you know, we have recently completed a series called: “The Right on Righteousness.” That has now led us to praying for revival. If you want to revisit some of those sermons, they are written here, on our blog page. Also, as we continue praying for revival, I hope that we can look at these sections of the Bible together and come away with a better understanding on two things:

  • Starting in Ezekiel, we will take an ‘in-house’ look at our hearts, Highland. Our focus will be our personal relationship with the Lord as it relates to the outworking of righteousness in our lives (our recent series focused on the in-working of righteousness between heaven and our hearts) these sermons, though, will be more of a look at the outworking (our responsibility) of righteousness in our lives. It also includes a closer look at generational sin and how that plays into our relationship with the Lord and in our lives, too.

  • As a people asking for the Lord to hunger for righteousness and setting our sites on that desire in our lives and especially our prayer-life, we will look at our relationship with our homes and our streets through the book of Isaiah.

Sunday, we read through the entire chapter of Ezekiel 18. We then simply broke open this passage. We began to look at what Scripture says about generational sin and what Scripture says about our personal relationship with the Lord. This chapter (Ezekiel 18) really hones in on this very matter. To gain some context around this passage, the Israelites are under Babylonian captivity - they have been under their rule for about 5 years. Ezekiel is part of the captivity and serves as the prophet of God during this generation of the God’s people. They are, frankly, upset with God and are expressing their frustration with Ezekiel; one core gripe - they feel they are sons and daughters paying for the sins of their fathers and mothers. In this passage (Ch 18), Ezekiel is offering the Lord’s response to this very frustration.

Here is the passage: “The word of the Lord came to me: What do you mean by using this proverb concerning the land of Israel:

The fathers eat sour grapes, and the children’s teeth are set on edge?

“As I live” — this is the declaration of the Lord God — “you will no longer use this proverb in Israel. 4 Look, every life belongs to Me. The life of the father is like the life of the son—both belong to Me. The person who sins is the one who will die” (Ezekiel 18:1-4).

The Israelites were allowing this saying to circulate throughout their days. This saying/proverb picked up a lot of traction because it’s based on how they felt about God’s Word, but their feelings were not based on the truth that is God’s Word and they were misguided by their feelings.

The proverb means that the sons and daughters who were in captivity felt that they were having to pay for their past generation’s sin. When you see someone eat something sour, then, as you observe, typically, onlookers will whence and recoil at the thought of being offered that which is sour. Furthermore, the statement indicates that they felt that the sour grapes were their inevitable and unavoidable option, hence, the children’s teeth were set on edge, meaning they are expecting to receive the sinfully-offensive and hostile nature of their father’s relationship with the Lord.

The passage goes on to explain how this proverb is based on a faulty foundation and does not stand as truth. Ezekiel then explains that for any person who repents, they will live! Ezekiel speaks to the heart of our Lord, the maker of heaven and earth; the Judge who sees our hearts and executes righteous judgments and is rich in mercy. In Ezekiel’s sermon, he highlights what we know to be true - ‘no one is righteous, no, not one’ (Rom 3). But, anyone who repents, no matter their background, their treachery, the deceit, their sin, if they repent, submitting to the Lordship of Jesus, that person who repents will receive salvation in the name of Jesus, alone. In so doing, we receive a new disposition through the renewing work of the Holy Spirit. He serves to convict and counsel us, bringing our heart into agreement with the heart of God.

As we repent and live, our heart-cry then becomes exactly how we are praying as a church:

Teach me, LORD, the meaning of Your statutes,

and I will always keep them.

Help me understand Your instruction,

and I will obey it

and follow it with all my heart.

Help me stay on the path of Your commands,

for I take pleasure in it.

Turn my heart to Your decrees

and not to material gain.

Turn my eyes

from looking at what is worthless;

give me life in Your ways.

Confirm what You said to Your servant,

for it produces reverence for You.

Turn away the disgrace I dread;

indeed, Your judgments are good.

How I long for Your precepts!

Give me life through Your righteousness. - (Psalm 119:33-40).

HOW WE ARE PRAYING

Highland, let us ask the Lord to give us life through His righteousness. This is possible through Christ alone, who bore our sin ‘that we might become the righteousness of God’ (2 Corinthians 5).

  • For those in our lives who are unrepentant, let us ask the Lord to bring them to repentance by way of the Holy Spirit’s conviction, that they may submit to the Lordship of Jesus, receiving forgiveness for their sin in His name.

  • For those of us who are repentant, who profess Jesus to be Lord, let us remain in total heart agreement with our Lord, hungering for His righteousness. Let us ask the Lord to fill us, as His people, that we might be a demonstration of His glory!

  • Also, let us ask the Lord to coat our eyes with His righteousness, that, as the eye is the lamp of the body, our eyes would reveal that our hearts find delight in being filled by the light of His presence.

Righteous Vs. Self-Righteous

Current Theme: The Right Grip on Righteousness

A word-study on the word “Righteousness” through the Sermon on the Mount.

Theme’s Biblical Foundation: Righteousness - sharing in a total heart-agreement with God (covenantal binding).

To share in this type of total heart-agreement (or covenant) with God is not possible through any form of human-effort. To be able to share in a total heart-agreement with God is solely possible because of what Jesus has done for us by overcoming sin and death and through the renewing counsel and conviction of the Holy Spirit; He gives us a new heart.

This devotion comes from our sermon from Sunday, May 16th. It was entitled: “Righteous Vs Self-Righteous.”

Below is a summation of that sermon:

Text for the Sermon: “Be careful not to practice your righteousness in front of others to be seen by them. If you do, you will have no reward from your Father in heaven. So when you give to the needy, do not announce it with trumpets, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and on the streets, to be honored by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. But when you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, so that your giving may be in secret. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you. And when you pray, do not be like the hypocrites, for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the street corners to be seen by others. Truly I tell you, they have received their reward in full. But when you pray, go into your room, close the door and pray to your Father, who is unseen. Then your Father, who sees what is done in secret, will reward you.” (Matthew 6:1-6, NIV).

Jesus, now offers us a way to test the root-system of our righteousness. Knowing that to be righteous is to share in a heart-agreement with God, means that our practice of righteousness is for His glory, not our own. If we are performing “good” acts to gain a “righteous status” for ourselves in His eyes or in the eyes of others, then we are being self-righteous. Therefore, a self-righteous person is not interested in God’s glory, but their personal-glory.

Self-righteous behavior is rooted in self-effort. That means that the fruits of self-righteousness is the criticism and judgment of others. Self-righteous people use others to measure their greatness against, and want nothing to do with someone that threatens their self-righteous nature.

The self-righteous person also demands that others come into agreement with them about their “right” positions and “good” actions. If you disagree with them, then you are immediately condemned and uprooted from their lives.

When the righteousness of Christ rewrites a sinners’ disposition through repentance, that person knows their great need for His grace; therefore, ceasing to judge others or attempt to perform vain acts for personal acclaim. Instead, the person who is righteous in the eyes of God places their entire hope and rest upon the performance of Christ Jesus, who paid for their sin on the cross. All they can see is their great need for His grace and are excited to offer that grace to those around them.

As we look back at the passage in Matthew, we see that Jesus highlights how we handle our giving to the poor and how we relate to the Lord in our prayer-life. How we conduct ourselves in these two examples reveal the root-system of our righteousness - if it is rooted in self, or in Christ.

Highland, it is my heart-cry that our righteousness be found to be rooted in Christ - that the fruit of His righteousness would be produced within the life of our church. May an overflow of His righteousness pour forth from the Highland-tribe!

I love you, Highland.

The Holy Spirit's Residing Within Our Hearts

The Holy Spirit's Possessing of Our Hearts

This post is from our series entitled: “The Right Grip on Righteousness”

“Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven” (Matthew 5:10, NIV).

The way Jesus speaks about righteousness here is to say that righteousness is residing within those who belong to the kingdom of God - ‘for theirs is the kingdom of God.’ This beatitude is really about “who” has possession of our hearts and the evidence of that possession being made known throughout our lives. If righteousness is sharing in a total heart agreement with the Lord and that is not possible in and of ourselves, then for us (a fallen, sinful person) then this heart agreement (this binding-covenant) is a supernatural work. It is a work of the power of the Holy Spirit.

This means that our sinful, dead hearts are culled out and made new! What does this supernatural work of the Holy Spirit look like?

Scripture explains the Holy Spirit’s work in us here: “We implore you on Christ’s behalf: Be reconciled to God. God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God” (2 Corinthians 5:20b-21, NIV).

This supernatural exchange is only possible through the gospel; those who repent in Jesus’ name have their sinful nature ridded and exchanged for the Holy Spirit of God. And as we remain submissive/obedient to His leading, coming into agreement with His Spirit, then His Holy Spirit loosens and releases generational sin and unclean spirits that have been stored within our hearts, while we were dead in our sin. Righteousness is then the fruit of our hearts because the Holy Spirit has bound and sealed Himself to our hearts.

An Eviction Notice from the Holy Spirit for the Repentant Sinner

Perhaps our best way to relate is consider that our hearts serve as houses where spirits dwell and reside within us (Matthew 12:43-45). Unclean spirits take up residence within and possess the hearts of the unrepentant. Scripture teaches us that those who do not know Jesus as Lord, that their hearts belong, not to the kingdom of heaven, but to this world and remain vulnerable to Satan! Those who are unrepentant or deceived by Satan, if their hearts are homes for unclean spirits, then their desires, actions, words, their lives altogether are evil; they produce sin and are comforatble with that type of evil-produce. Here is just one example Jesus offers us about a person that speaks evil because their hearts are residences and a storing place for evil spirits:

“A good man brings good things out of the good stored up in him, and an evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in him. But I tell you that everyone will have to give account on the day of judgment for every empty word they have spoken. For by your words you will be acquitted, and by your words you will be condemned” (Matthew 12:35-37, NIV).

Why? Because our hearts are rooted in the sin-cursed soil of this world and evil spirits find a place of rest there, in the hearts of the unrepentant. Because that is so, they remain in participation with Satan and they can only produce sinful-fruit. Their heart does not belong to the Kingdom of God; their hearts belong to Satan and His demons possess it.

But when our sin-bound souls are awakened by the piercing life and light of Jesus and we repent, the Holy Spirit then comes in and evicts every one of those evil and unclean spirits! He takes up residence within our hearts, sealing our hearts with His holiness. We then, through obedience to the Holy Spirit, see that our hearts come into agreement with God; He makes our hearts His home, cleansing our hearts and He renews our disposition with the very righteousness of Christ Jesus!

Out of that newly righteous disposition flows desires, deeds and words which reveal that we belong to the Kingdom of God. Now, we continue to wrestle with sin and with those who are ruled by spiritual principalities of darkness; we will continue to till the day we die. But we do so with the power and sealing of the Holy Spirit, Who produces an agreement in our hearts with our God; He will go before us all the way to heaven - “for blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.”
