This Sunday, we look forward to our Tent Gathering. We continue through our 1st Thessalonians Series. We are in chapter 4. As we gather this Sunday for our Tent Gathering, I wanted to go over the schedule with you. This Sunday, our schedule is as follows:

  • 9am-10am: Coffee and Conversation. As you arrive, grab a cup of coffee and a breakfast sandwich. Enjoy having conversation with one another and the chance to be together. Also, if you’re willing, some will be setting up for the 10 am service. We welcome your help, if you’re able.

  • 10am-11am: Tent Gathering Service. *At 10am, bring your camping chairs or blankets to make for yourself a place outside, underneath our tent. We will gather to worship as we set our eyes upon Jesus. Highland, I ask that we would be in prayer for the name of Jesus to be exalted in our corporate gathering; that those who wander, or are deceived throughout our streets, would hear that Jesus saves, and repent! We will conclude and dismiss following this service. So, breakfast will be offered but not lunch.

We are strongly encouraging social distancing and masks will be available for those who would feel most comfortable wearing one. If you have a mask, please bring one for yourself to use.  We ask that you stay home when you are sick. We also ask that you cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash. Also, avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands. Finally, keeping your hands clean using sanitizer or by washing them with soap is vital. If you have a personal bottle of sanitizer, bring it and keep it on you for your personal use throughout gatherings.

1 Thessalonians 4:1-2 Sermon Recap

1ST THESSALONIANS SERIES

OUR PURPOSE

A TIME FOR CONCENTRATION ON OUR SANCTIFICATION

OUR ANCHORING VERSE

“FOR GOD HAS NOT CALLED US TO IMPURITY BUT TO SANCTIFICATION.”

(I THESSALONIANS 4:7)

“Finally then, brothers, we ask and encourage you in the Lord Jesus, that as you have received from us how you must walk and please God — as you are doing — do so even more. For you know what commands we gave you through the Lord Jesus” (1st Thessalonians 4:1-2).

‘We ask and encourage you in the Lord Jesus’

One of the richest blessings Carrie and I share is the joy of our 3 sons. Since they have come into our lives, Noah, Luke and Jude have made our days better in every way. Being their father, though, requires me to parent them; to instruct them. To do so, effectively, starts with my personal walk with the Lord. I must walk in a way that is pleasing to the Lord before them, first from my heart, then in my actions. It is only my submission to the Holy Spirit’s conviction and counsel that will create in me an obedience, which leads to a gospel-flavored fruitfulness. As I remain submitted, I must continue to do so, bearing fruits consistent with the Holy Spirit’s renewing of my disposition as their dad.

If I simply tell them what to do, even if it is right, but they do not observe me doing what is right in the eyes of the Lord, then my parenting will produce the wrong result in some way. They may hear and respond to my instructions, however, if they see the hypocrisy of my own life, then authority and respect in our relationship becomes compromised.

However, if I walk in a manner before them that is pleasing to the Lord, then when I correct their behavior, they are going to be much more inclined to listen and receive my instruction from a father who’s garnered their respect. As I remain submitted to the Holy Spirit, the old adage comes out of my life correctly: “I am not just ‘talking the talk’, I am walking the walk.” So, then, the actions in my life that are consistent with the Holy Spirit’s renewal of my disposition, then serve to provide me the proper authority to speak as their father and parent them.

So, when I then have the fatherly discussion with them and I have to say, “As your father, I am asking you to…”; “As your father, I am encouraging you to…” then the statements (the commands, the instructions, the encouragement) that follows bear the appropriate weight, often garnering the respectful and right response.

This is what Paul is doing here in chapter 4. This pastoral council (made up of Paul, Timothy and Silas) is asking and encouraging the believers of Thessalonica to continue to walk in a manner pleasing to the Lord from a fatherly-authority. Their fruits have served to provide them this authority and the church was, therefore, receptive and fruitful.

‘We ask and encourage you in the Lord Jesus’

As Paul asks and encourages in the Lord Jesus, he is pointing to the fact that they are bound, as family, in Christ. Being made alive in Christ, the Holy Spirit is now the seed and the counsel that is renewing their disposition as the Lord’s children, yet also sealing them for heaven, eternally.

So, he emphasizes this corporate holy-branding that is renewing them all, in their submission to the Lordship of Christ, making each of them holy as He is holy. That shared identity is the mark of their sanctification, personally and collectively! This holy renewal taking place within them is then pouring forth through them - may this be ever truer of us, Highland - so that the glory of God is produced and that the good of those in our lives would be promoted!

“As you are walking in a manner that is pleasing to the Lord, do so even more…”

Highland, as Paul is asking the Thessalonian-believers to’ do so even more’, this is where I want our hearts to hold onto as well. Let us walk in a manner that is pleasing to the Lord even more so. This is the road of our sanctification that is being traveled - being, even more so, holy with each passing day and decision and He is holy. If we profess Jesus to be Lord with our lips, then our hearts belong to the Holy Spirit. Therefore, the evidence then becomes that we are less and less comfortable with sin and grow more comfortable within the presence of our Lord, Who is holy. This is how I have encouraged you to pray and I continue to pray for us, as we continue our journey of sanctification, which results in our hearts being at home in His holiness. Psalm 119:33-37, Highland, let us continue to pray through this passage, together.

I love you, Highland,

Rob

A Letter From My Heart

“Be alert, stand firm in the faith, act like a man, be strong. Your every action must be done with love.”

1st Corinthians 16:13

Highland,

So much has changed since March of 2020! Even though the only real constant is change, the pandemic was such an unexpected agent of change that the results have certainly been drastic. 1 Corinthians 16:13 perfectly captures my responses and decisions as we continue to move forward.

I realize that we, like all, have encountered a major impact from the result of the pandemic. Due to tricky logistics to navigate, we have been thrusted outdoors and we have held services outside since June of 2020. I have sought to remain alert, to be faithful to commit to gathering together, and to make decisions compelled from my love for our Lord and for you! I want to thank each of you for your adaptability and your resolve, Highland. The Lord has seen fit to keep us together, small as we are, for the purposes of putting His might on display. When I hear and sing the line from Andrew Peterson's song: “So Long Moses” - ‘From you, O Bethlehem, small among Judah…” the Lord always brings Highland Community Church to my mind. Small as we are, Highland, the Lord is fulfilling His mighty purposes through us!

I constantly rejoice over that fact that the uncertainty of these times has not led us to become uncertain as a body of believers. We continue to prove to be a people who know and obey the Lord’s calling to serve, not be served, as the local body of Highland Community Church, all for our Lord’s Name and glory. Our neighbors have taken great joy in our labor of love, even throughout the shutdown, when we were literally providing meals for hundreds of people each week throughout our streets.

Even to this day, we remain consistent throughout these inconsistent times. Since starting Tent Gatherings, in June of 2020, we have actually seen the church grow! Many have submitted to the Lordship of Jesus, making a public profession of Christ, while being baptized. We actually have too many people attending to fit back into our sanctuary at this present time.

Throughout this pandemic, the Lord has been faithful to even provide, literally, millions toward the future and the hope He has established for His glory within the life of Highland Community Church.

Truth Spring Academy survived the shutdown and even found a road forward to creatively reignite in-person instruction, while maintaining our enrollment and mission. Truth Spring Trade School was given birth by way of the prayer-life of our church during the shutdown and started its inaugural year in January of 2021.

What has remained constant, Highland, and will remain constant into the future is that we will remain a church that stands firm upon the immovable truth of God’s Holy Word. I will always allow every word I utter in any sermon, counseling-session or writing to be submitted to the supreme authority of God’s Word. With all the changes swirling around us right now, there is no variation or shadow to be found in the presence of our Lord; we will maintain our firm and steady grip upon His Word. Highland Tribe, as we move forward, we do not know what might come our way. But, as the Lord knows, as Pastor of Highland Community Church, my plan is for us to stand firm on the solid foundation of God’s Word! Placing our feet upon His Word is our surest and safest stance - come what may!

Highland, I am looking forward to the future with great anticipation and hope! I have no doubt that this season of gatherings and this season of pruning is according to the leading of the Holy Spirit - it is producing within us a peculiar glory - unique to Highland, but to be recognized by all - for His glory. As we prepare to break ground on a new future, this peculiar season serves to prepare our hearts for entering into that new season as a unified people for the Lord’s glory and the good of His Kingdom. Let’s go, Highland. Let’s take up our full confidence in the faithfulness of our Lord and let us press on to know Him, glorify and adore Him.

I am honored, Highland, to serve as your Pastor. I look forward to stepping into the future with you, being guided and empowered by the Holy Spirit, while always maintaining our footing upon His Word.

I love you,

Rob
