Highland, how I rejoice over you! How I celebrate the Lord’s goodness in calling us together, that we might be light and salt throughout our streets. May the name of Jesus continue to be celebrated in our heart, as Highland Community Church, in one accord. May He move in all power in our midst, changing hearts, drawing us even deeper into His loving arms.

May the Holy Spirit wash throughout our streets, cleansing them with His righteousness, drawing sinners to repentance. Highland, let us ask for more His presence – that the conviction of the Holy Spirit might fill us to the point that we abound in fruitfulness.

To all who serve, thank you! Highland could NOT function without your dedication and your kindness. I wish you knew the depth of my gratitude for you. From those who pick up trash, to those who drive the van, to those who clean toilets – thank you! Please know your contribution does not go unnoticed.

Drawing From Daniel

Finding Our Hope in the Holiness of God

Our church services (we call services “Firehouse Gatherings”) are held each Sunday morning at 10am in the Firehouse (3402 6th Ave). All are welcome to attend. There is no climate control, so dress suitably for the weather conditions. Also, you may want to bring a camping chair, as we do not always have enough seats available.

This Sunday, we will be tackling the all-intriguing personal vision that Daniel receives from the Lord. We delve into chapter eight. This chapter reaches back and correlates with chapter five. Eight begins with the insight that Belshazzar, the Babylonian king we learn about in chapter five, will lose the throne. Under the reign of Cyrus, The Medes & The Persians will overtake his throne.

In the vision, we are transported with Daniel to a lesser known province of Babylon called Susa. This city will become the central stage of Cyrus’s empire, once He marches in with the Mede & Persian army, overtaking the Babylonians. Come, journey with us through this adventurous piece of Scripture!

Psalm 15

We continue praying through Psalm 15 this Sunday. We will highlight and pray through the fifth one this Sunday: Swears to their own hurt. The gist here is that we maintain our word, even if it costs us. When we commit, let’s keep true to our word, even when it’s costly. More to come this Sunday on this, as we pray.

It’s important to not see these attributes as rules or standards, Highland. That’s not the nature of this list. These qualities are simply attributes — elements that are the result of a given nature. The nature of an apple tree will thereby produce apples — there’s no performance or striving from the apple tree in its production of apples — it’s just being an apple tree. When our hearts are submissive to the holy name of Jesus, then saturated by the Holy Spirit, our nature cannot help but to change, yielding Holy-Spirit-flavored fruits. Oh, how I long for us to yield these fruits as His people! In closing, I look forward to seeing you Sunday, Highland. Hope you’re having a great week.

I enjoyed being together so very much last Sunday. Seeing correlations in Psalm 15 being brought to life in Daniel has blessed me tremendously in my personal study. It is my hope you’ve found these connections meaningful as well.

Finding Our Hope in the Holiness of God

This Sunday, we will see how Daniel maintains an immovable resolve, as his hope is yielded to the holiness of God to the utmost! Daniel becomes the victim of a political assault. His enemies are so vicious that their hatred of his prestige results in his death-sentence being issued. Daniel’s fearlessness, emboldened by the Lord, does not cower – even facing death! It would be helpful to read ahead, as we will be in the latter half of chapter six this Sunday.

Speaking of reading, please – open those Bibles and read them. Our hearts are calmed by the refreshing waters of God’s Word. As we continue to pray through Psalm 15, this would be a great place to mediate over God’s Word. Write the Psalm. Reflect on how the Lord has, perhaps, taught you through Psalm 15 lately. Another idea might be to write down these attributes and recall a time when you have seen them play out in your life.

Be prepared that we also will highlight and pray through: ‘Honors those who fear the Lord’, from Psalm 15. This Psalm lays out for us the fruits one who’s submitted to the name of Jesus, maintaining repentance. How might you have seen someone honor those who fear the Lord in your life? Has there been a specific moment in your life when you have done so? We have certainly seen Daniel do so, when he requested for Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego to serve alongside him when he was promoted to serve in the royal court throughout the Babylonian era (Daniel 2:49).

Know that I love you, Highland. I am looking forward to gathering once again this Sunday. Also, dress warmly. It will be cold. Finally, it’s also helpful to bring a camping chair, if you have one. Highland,

As Sunday nears, I look forward to seeing you! It thrills me to know we get to gather, celebrating Jesus! He saves sinners! May we come, ready to rejoice over salvation being found in His Name!

As you know, we have been unpacking Psalm 15 over the last few Sundays. Last week, we walked through the first two verses, honing in on what it means to sojourn, to dwell within His holy presence. We then looked at one of the fruits David notes as evidence of sharing in His holy nature, that being: To not slander others. That sermon is available online, through our audio page. Altogether, there are seven “fruits” David mentions in Psalm 15.

As we open God’s Word together this Sunday, we will be merging these fruits found in Psalm 15 with our series through Daniel. I suggest to you that, as Daniel remained yielded to the Lord’s Holy Name, Daniel brought these fruits into being. As we return to Daniel, we will be in chapter six. In this saga, he was entrapped, back-stabbed, falsely accused and sentenced to death, yet, there was no slander found on his lips! His tongue was consumed with his prayer-life, Highland — blessing His holy God!! May THIS characterize us! May our lips be so saturated His praises, Highland, that slanderous-language finds no place to land upon them!

As far as the remaining attributes found in Psalm 15, we will pray through those together, through a weekly Communal Prayer. If you are looking over the list we’ve covered and feel compelled to speak briefly to how the Lord is teaching you through this Psalm and these truths, then please consider leading our church in a Communal Prayer. Get with me. We have completed the first two. We are on the third one listed this upcoming Sunday.

Our Weekly Update

Highland,

Happy New Year! Let us hold fast to the Lord’s faithfulness, Highland! As we continue to endure together these viscous attacks from satan, let us continue to fix our eyes upon Jesus! He offers us hope that results in victory. Highland, may we see the resiliency that is being produced within us, as we fortify our confidence in the Lord’s faithfulness unto us. For in His presence alone, our hearts find security and rest.

This Saturday, we will hold Beverly’s Memorial Service. It will be held at the Firehouse, at 2pm. All are invited and welcome to attend.

There will be no Chicken & Rice this Saturday. We will be taking time to pray through and discuss how to reconsider doing Chicken & Rice, as Alan is no longer with us. Seek the Lord with our team, Highland. We meet this Saturday, at 10am.

We will hold services this Sunday. Our Sunday will begin at 9am, with Coffee & Conversation, along with Robert’s Bible Study. We will then hold our 10am service. Childcare will be offered this Sunday for children 4 and under. Kids’ Sunday will not be resuming at this time. Once we get into the new facility, we will revisit how to minister to our children on Sundays.

This Sunday, we will continue to reflect on Psalm 15. Please make this Psalm part of your time in God’s Word, Highland. Here are the attributes this passage reflects, which we will cultivate through the prayer-life of our church:

  1. Does not slander others (*Slander - make false and damaging statements about someone).

Finally, Alan Lisenby’s Memorial Service will be held Wednesday, January 10th, at 4pm. It will be held in our red-brick sanctuary on fifth avenue. All are welcome to attend.

Alan Lisenby's Obituary

Perry “Alan” Lisenby

7/30/1963-12/27/2023

A beloved member of our community passed away on December 27th, 2023.

Alan will always be remembered by his hard work and his heart to serve; he never turned down an opportunity to help someone day or night. He was respected by many in the North Highland Community as he took care of the sick and encouraged many on the streets. He was an active and cherished member of Highland Community Church. He served as part of the Chicken and Rice Team every Saturday morning bringing food to the poor, and he was known to go into unreached areas that no one else would go.

He had a joy as he worked that came from his faith in the Lord that enabled him to serve his neighbors and community in many ways that cannot be replaced. His last years here with us can be summed up in the greatest commandment: “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart…You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” (Mark 12:30-31). He will be deeply missed, and his memory will always be treasured.

Alan is survived by his mother, Joyce Monfort, sister, Silena Thomas, and brother Brian Lisenby. His daughter, Alana Maria Lisenby, along with his three sons Emanuel, John, and Kraig Lisenby are also with us, cherishing the memory of their father. He is preceded in death by his father, Jerry Lisenby, and his eldest brother, Larry Lisenby.

A memorial service will be held for Alan at Highland Community Church (3408 5th Avenue Columbus, Ga 31904), on Wednesday, January 10th at 4:00 pm. Alan’s desire was to leave money to help support his young daughter, Alana. Donations may be made out to Highland Community Church, and any money collected will be put into a savings account for her. Thank you for helping us honor his memory.

Drawing From Daniel Recap

Being Spiritual vs Being Submissive

Nebuchadnezzar is clearly a spiritual man. Throughout his reign, he is seeking spiritual counsel as he is unable to understand his own thoughtlife. Daniel was part of that counsel and the Lord proves true and powerful. But even as the Lord displays His power and authority to Nebuchadnezzar, his heart remains prideful and unsubmissive to the Lord’s name. He did not want to know the Lord. Instead, Nebuchadnezzar wanted his spiritual life to serve his ends, to help him gain control over his own life, to accomplish his own desires. Though he was spiritual, prior to the Lord humbling him, he remained unsubmissive.

Highland, liking church, liking Christian music, gospel music, serving during the holidays – that’s just spiritual stuff, that’s not submission. To be submissive is to see our sinfulness; loathe it, as the Holy Creator of heaven and earth does, then we yield our prideful revelry to His Lordship. The evidence of our submission is seen in the Holy Spirit-flavored-fruits of our lives. It results in His glory and the good of others comprising our very lives. There’s a flourishing that comes from our lives submitted to His Spirit — ‘rivers of living water’ flow out of us! The invitation to repent results in us living life-abundant, in His life-giving and holy Name!

The Invitation to Repent is Not a Threat

In talking with Bart Scarborough lately, he has told me how much he appreciates a statement Trevor Hudson makes: ‘The call for repentance is not a threat; it’s an invitation.’ In Daniel 4:27, I hear in Daniel’s voice this invitational plea: “Oh, King, let my counsel be acceptable to you: break off your sins by practicing righteousness and your iniquities by showing mercy to the oppressed.”

When another prophet came to speak to another king in the Old Testament, the king was guilty. Yet, he admitted his iniquity and ran from it, pleading that the God in heaven was his only hope. He laid bare before the Lord his sinfulness, asking for forgiveness and pursued righteousness. He also spent his days showing mercy to the oppressed in unprecedented ways. He found hope in the holiness of God, Highland – so can we. His Holy name is salvation and endures eternally – through every circumstance we face, Highland.

I pray that we are known as a sinful people humbled before our holy God. Let us maintain a fruitful repentance. May we continue to break off our sin by practicing righteousness and rid ourselves of iniquity by showing mercy to the oppressed. Like Daniel, it is my hope that we are a ‘stream of living water’ in this desert; that all who partake would taste of the goodness of the Lord — leading to submissive-repentance.

This Sunday, we continue through our series: “Drawing From Daniel — Finding Hope in the Holiness of God.” David Klaus will now step into our series. He will be preaching the next two weeks, Highland. He will be taking us through correlations found in chapters 5 & 7. This Sunday, we also begin Advent. To those are already scheduled to read, thank you! Talk to Kimberly Klaus if you would like to participate. Also, shoutout to Kimberly and Megan for pulling it altogether.

KIDS’ SUNDAY IS THIS SUNDAY

As the 10am service begins, please drop off your children who are 5 and up at the original sanctuary to get checked in. During the service, children will either be in the classrooms off the deck for a Bible lesson or a craft. Outdoor games will be held in the Stricklands’ backyard as well. Furthermore, if you’re interested in helping with Kids’ Sundays, please talk to Julie Jordan, Katie Sturgeon or Carol Wright. As soon as service concludes, please make arrangements to pick up your children.

Sara Catherine is working on collecting the Adventure Bible for the kids at M2540 for Christmas. She needs Bibles by December 17th because she will be handing them out on Monday the 18th. People can either bring bibles or money to buy Bibles.

As Ms. Patti continues to rally around the Throne of Grace, all are welcome to join her! May we remain a people of prayer, Highland. Let us shake the grounds with the rally cry of our prayer-life, Highland!

Finally, if you would like to do drives through the month of December through your work place for Boxes of Love, we can direct you as to how that would be a help as well.

Our annual Boxes of Love allows families of Highland Community Church to give to those in need. At 9am, we will need assistance prepping the boxes, packing the boxes, and delivering them to the homes of the recipients. Those who are willing to help transport the boxes should be prepared to start delivering at 11 am. We will also need volunteers to help clean up, thanks.

At 9am, we will need assistance prepping the boxes, packing the boxes, and delivering them to the homes of the recipients. Our Weekly Update

Highland Fam,

I want to thank all who played a part in leading last Sunday. Our family was away and I heard such great feedback regarding our service! Highland, as the time continues to go by, my gratitude for you only deepens. Thank you all who make Sundays enjoyable for all of us! Shoutout to Joseph Davis for being willing to preach. I appreciate you being willing to take part in our series through Daniel. His sermon is available and can be found on our audio-page.

We had a great time in Knoxville, Highland. We snuck away last weekend to see Ben Rector in concert at the elegant Tennessee Theater. We ate hearty, southern cuisine and enjoyed staying at the luxurious Tennessean Hotel. However, every good trip ends with getting home — and we’re back! We look forward to being back at Highland with you this Sunday.

During our service, we will take a break from our series through Daniel, as we will be spending time focusing on family. Reason being — this Sunday is our Child Dedication Service. We will wrap the entire service around the value to family. Join us as we celebrate the health of the home, asking the Lord to fill our hearts and homes with His presence. As of last Wednesday, our Marriage Study has concluded. Thank you, Kim and Nancy, for leading all who’ve attended so honestly! It has provided us all the chance to strengthen our relationship with our spouses as we have looked at our own hearts in the light of His presence.

Our Weekly Update

Highland Tribe,

Last Sunday, we broke ground on the third chapter of Daniel. Seeing the resolve of Shadrach, Meschach & Abednego to maintain a sure grip on the holy name of their Lord thrills my heart! Even in the face of death, they placed their hope in the holiness of God! Though He can deliver, even if He does not, we will not bow to a graven image. Their lives speak boldly the testimony of their faithfulness, Highland.

Though Nebuchadnezzar had verbally acknowledged the God of Daniel as the one, true God at the end of chapter two, still his heart was unmoved by the authority of His Holy name. This is evidenced in chapter three that, now, 19 years later, he is seeking to exalt his own name, in the wake of adding to the Babylonian kingdom, then demanding people honor him, or die. As the prophet Isaiah stated: Nebuchadnezzar had ‘drawn near to the Lord with his mouth, but his heart remained far from Him.’

Highland, asking for more of the Holy Spirit, as we yield our hearts to His conviction and counsel, produces spiritual fruitfulness, not just leaving us with spiritual language. Oh, Highland family, that we would yield the fruit of light, righteousness and life, in His holy name, throughout our days! Our God is glorified and we are edified, in every season of the life of our church!

Sunday Mornings at 9am

Grabbing a cup of coffee and a breakfast sandwich is such a simple way to fellowship together. Come and enjoy being together, as we also worship and hear Jo Ellen offer us such a helpful devotion, which we all learn how to better walk according to God’s Word. Robert continues to lead our men’s study. It takes place in our church’s education building each Sunday morning, at 9am. All men are welcome. I want to challenge you all to jump in and grow, in Christ, together.

Sunday Mornings at 10am

Our church service (we call services “Firehouse Gatherings”) are held each Sunday morning in the Firehouse (3402 6th Ave). All are welcome to attend. Come, let us repent, keeping our heart humble before Jesus, Who is our payment for sin. May our hearts rejoice over Him, in one accord! Our family will be away this weekend. We are going to Knoxville to see a concert. Joseph Davis will be preaching. He will continue on with our series through Daniel. Joseph offers us such a solid grip on God’s Word; I am thrilled to have him take part in this series with us. Billy will lead us in worship. His heart for the Lord and His ability to foster corporate worship is such a gift to Highland. I am blessed beyond measure to serve alongside these men.

KIDS’ SUNDAY IS THIS SUNDAY

On November 12th, please drop off your children who are 5 and up at the original sanctuary to get checked in. During the service, children will either be in the classrooms off the deck for a Bible lesson or a craft. Outdoor games will be held in the Stricklands’ backyard as well. Furthermore, if you’re interested in helping with Kids’ Sundays, please talk to Julie Jordan, Katie Sturgeon or Carol Wright. As soon as service concludes, please make arrangements to pick up your children.

Feed My Block with North Highland Assembly of God

Highland, November 17th at 5pm, North Highland Assembly of God will be hosting Feed My Block, at the Firehouse (3402 6th Ave), where we hold Sunday services. Please make plans to come and get yourselves food, if you need some. We look forward to seeing you. If you know of someone who needs food, please tell them to come.

Throughout the Week

Mondays @ M2540, 6:30pm

Come and join the tremendous team of people, who love the Lord and reach out to love our neighbor. Each Monday, 6:30-7:30pm, you are invited to be part of this wonderful time of community at M2540.

Wednesdays, 9am

All are welcome to attend our Prayer Gatherings at 9am, Wednesday mornings. They gather at the Firehouse. This is a time centered on being the people of God who seek the face of God, together.

Marriage Study this fall, Wednesdays, 6:15pm

Our marriage study continues to be such a rich experience for us all. Looking forward to seeing all of you who’ve registered this Wednesday, 6:15pm. Thank you, Sheeks!

Upcoming December Events

Highland’s Annual Christmas Carnival

Date: Christmas Carnival, Friday, December 8th, 3pm-5pm

Location: Firehouse: 3402 6th Ave Columbus, GA 31904

Our annual Christmas Carnival serves to keep Christ at the center of Christmas. All children who attend will receive a present and get to hear about the birth of Christ. Inflatables and carnival-style food and games will be offered. Volunteers are needed to assist with the facilitation of these events. We need manpower to assist with crowd control, fostering safe use of the inflatables and cleaning up at the end of the event. Sign Up Genius to be issued soon.

Boxes of Love

Date: December 16th, 2023

Location: 3402 6th Ave Columbus, GA 31904

Highland fam, as we are moving toward Christmas, one practical thing you could do is buy a bottle of dish soap for Boxes of Love. Please bring it with you to service on Sundays, as we will store it there. With Boxes of Love, we allow folks to sign up and offer a Box of Love to someone in their lives to bless them this Christmas Season. Thanks for your support!

Our annual Boxes of Love allows families of Highland Community Church to give to those in need. At 9am, we will need assistance prepping the boxes, packing the boxes, and delivering them to the homes of the recipients. Those who are willing to help transport the boxes should be prepared to start delivering at 11 am. We will also need volunteers to help clean up, thanks.
