Our Weekly Update

We celebrated our 20th Anniversary Wednesday.

twenty years of life together

Highland,

We celebrated 20 years of marriage this week! Our journey has been such an adventure! How the Lord continues to prove faithful! Twenty years ago, I had no idea that Highland would still be around! Wow, how the Lord orchestrates His plans and how His plans have prevailed! Carrie and I rejoice over you, Highland. As He has been so good to me and to Carrie, He continues to be good to us, Highland. Let’s celebrate His faithfulness all of our days! Through it all, He has fashioned His purposes into the life of our marriage and into the life of Highland. So happy to share this journey with you, Highland!

bringing our series in for a landing

As we are bringing in this Spiritual Warfare Series for a landing, I hope to answer one question this Sunday – As the Church, how do we deal with and respond to spiritual warfare? In addressing this question, I hope to highlight how Scripture directs our hearts in strategically (Biblically) responding to the devil and the demonic forces that often torment us. Join us, as we take a closer look.

Our Weekly Update

hope for highland

Hope amid hopelessness is found only in Jesus. The church exists to celebrate our eternal hope in Christ, while declaring His Lordship to a hopeless world. Highland, though the hopelessness often seems vast, our hope found in Christ will endure through every hurt and every disappointment. You may notice this sign along 2nd Avenue capturing who we are; declaring hope in Christ to a hopeless world. Highland, I love you. I am grateful to share in what the Lord has done for us – what He continues to do for us! May we continue to be a people marked by an abounding gratitude because we have tasted of the eternal hope found in Christ Jesus! May Highland (may the world) experience this hope!

Taken while I parked my chair in the shoreline.

waves of restfulness

Our family got the chance to unwind a bit last weekend. We enjoyed some time at the beach together, with Carrie’s family. The storm really moved out of our region on Thursday, revealing sunny conditions in Panama City. To those who led us last Sunday, thank you! I appreciate the opportunity to catch my breath and to make some memories with my family. It would not be possible without you – thank you all for ALL you do!

Every good trip, though, ends with getting home. I am so thrilled to be back with you this Sunday. I look forward to seeing you, as we gather to celebrate the only good news we will ever hear – the Gospel of Jesus Christ! Join us.

As I return this Sunday, we pick back up with our Spiritual Warfare Series. We will now begin to bring this series in for a landing. As I continue to seek the Lord's face for direction as to how to lead us through the landing, I invite you to pray along with me. As plans are being made, we will start with a quick-stop in James this Sunday, then travel to Hebrews together. In so doing, we will address how Satan’s attack always wants to warp our communion with the Lord, our unity with one another in an effort to isolate us. Looking forward to continuing this journey through Scripture with you!

Our Weekly Update

Jack & Fletcher

hoping you’re dry!

Highland,

I hope that everyone has been able to hunker down and stay safe through the storm! Our family has made the best of it. As schools, including Truth Spring , were closed due to inclement weather, our family loaded up on snacks, watched movies and slept in!

It also happens that our family was headed down to the beach. We did not invite Helene! Our plans have certainly been altered by her unexpected visit. As I write to you (it’s Thursday), we have delayed our departure date. Weather allowing, we will still try to sneak away a bit – even if it’s just for a couple of days. The beach is worth it!

Being that is the case, the noble Justin Jordan has so kindly agreed to teach my Sunday School class. The humble and talented Hank Shelbly will lead us in corporate worship. Finally, Robert Singleton, who embodies the very meaning of hopefulness, will take the pulpit. He will be preaching on faithfulness.

With me being away, we will hit the pause button on our Spiritual Warfare Series. As a brief recap to last Sunday’s sermon. James instructs believers to never speak evil to one another – asking believers: “who are we to judge our neighbor” (James 4:11-12)?

In the close of his letter, James directs us on how to conduct ourselves with an enduring patience, while facing various seasons we encounter throughout our days. He then ends his letter with a charge – we are to snatch back those who wander from the truth from the fires of hell, thereby covering a multitude of sin. Instead of grumbling and quarreling over each other’s sin, we are instructed to pursue those deceived by Satan in order to cover their shame with truth and mercy (James 5:7-19).

Now, we do not participate with those wandering in their sinfulness (Galatians 6; Psalm 32:1), yet, intercede for them; treating them as we would want to be treated. Highland, in closing, may our conduct be found to be aligned with James’s instruction. Last Sunday’s sermon can be found on our audio page.

Issac professed Christ as Lord Sunday!  He was then baptized!  We celebrate newness of life with you, Issac!

Our Weekly Update

Billy & Tyrone Tucker - Back in the day, at Banquet on the Bridge.

wrapping up our spiritual warfare series

Highland,

As we continue to work through our Spiritual Warfare Series, we will transition into Hebrews 12 this Sunday – our final passage for this series. I am aiming to be done with this series this Sunday. Let’s see what the Lord has planned for us. I remain open to His plans unfolding.

In a brief recap, James tells us that, if we’re quarreling about who’s right with others, trying to make our Christianity more “shiny”, we could not be more wrong! Satan seizes this kind of discord as an opportunity to misguide believers, destroying our unity.

James goes on to tell us that we are to resist the devil, which means to not afford him an opportunity to devour us. Rather, submitting to God results in us finding our refuge, even our strength, in Him! Let us be a people, Highland, that release our hearts into His holiness! In so doing, we find our delight, no longer striving, but resting, rather, in Him, come what may!

Highland,

I want to thank all who made last week’s Agape Feast such a festive affair! So much took place behind the scenes beforehand, throughout and afterward – I am grateful to each and every one of you. Serving in this manner is such a clear expression of how the Lord’s directing us to go deeper – through staying together, serving together and studying together.

On that note, I continue to see such a strong response to Sunday School! To those who are leading, keep going! To those of you who are attending, I am grateful for your commitment to growing! If you’ve not had the opportunity to attend yet, please know that the door remains open to you.

To all who are facilitating Sunday mornings, I so appreciate you. From driving the van, to grabbing biscuits, leading worship, making coffee – Sunday mornings is an “us-thing.” Let’s continue to serve together, Highland, in one accord, being of one mind – the glory of our Lord and the good of one another.

Hank Shelby leads us in worship Sunday. His heart is to honor the Lord, using his God-given gifts to make an offering of praise to the name of the Lord. Side note – the last two weeks’ sermons have now been posted. I have been running a little behind in light of gearing up for the new school year over the last couple of weeks. The dust is now settling and I am catching up. Sorry for any inconvenience. Also, we held Communion last Sunday (18th). Therefore, there will be no sermon posted.

Our Weekly Update

sunday school sessions off to a great start!

Highland,

Our Fall Sunday School Sessions are underway! I could not be more proud of us! To see us, as a church, commit to the growth of one another is earnest love in action! Good job, Highland!

“By wisdom a house is built, and by understanding it is established; by knowledge the rooms are filled with all precious and pleasant riches” (Proverbs 24:3-4).

How I asked the Lord to grant us wisdom in the building of our new home. How I pleaded with Him to fill the rooms – and He has proven faithful to do so! So much so, that we had to house one of our classes in the red-brick sanctuary. Mike Hare, thanks for being such a team player and taking one for the team! We appreciate you.

If you missed last Sunday, that’s okay. You are welcome to jump in midstream! As Simon Sinek so plainly stated: A community is a group of people who agree to grow together. Jump in a group and let’s all grow together! We meet Sunday mornings at 9am. This session is 12 weeks long and will end October 27th.

This Fall Session includes:

  • Classroom 1: 0-2 year olds in the Church Nursery

Our Weekly Update

hope shines brightest in the darkest of days

Highland,

Hope – an experience to be had only in the presence of the enduring and eternal love of Christ. Because hope is only the result of a heart yielded unto the light of the Lord’s presence, it shines brightest in the darkest of days.

In the last 6 to 8 months, we have experienced some perplexing and dark circumstances as a church. So much so, that the hopelessness of this world has been a ravaging-force to be contended with (fueled by Satan, no doubt). How I grieve over those who’ve been affected by the wave of Satan’s despair and destruction. How I have felt my own shortcomings in the wake of Satan’s rampage.

Even still, what is stirring in me, though, is not a greater sense of defeat, or a battle with hopelessness in my own heart, it’s a refining-confidence in the Lord’s Word, Highland. His truths feel sharper. His promises, even more assuring. My heart resonates with the Psalmist who writes:

“With my whole heart I cry; answer me, O LORD! I will keep your statutes. I call to you; save me, that I may observe your testimonies. I rise before dawn and cry for help; I hope in your words.” – Psalm 119:45-47.

His Word promises that the hope from His holiness will not disappoint. His Word promises that death has been swallowed up in victory, through Christ Jesus, our Lord. Highland, no matter what the circumstances, let us place our hope in His Words!

This is the backdrop for Sunday’s sermon – to recognize the work of the devil in those who do not revere the Word of God and to become resilient in His Word as those who trust in His Word.

marc’s passing

Highland,

This week, our streets suffered a hard loss – Marc Taylor (Cookie’s son) passed away. We learned of his passing Thursday morning. We are surrounding his brother, Chris, in loving support. Let’s continue to pray for Chris, as he processes and grieves this tragic loss. The passing of his brother is not too far removed from the passing of his mother, Cookie, who died earlier this year. May we impart to Chris the enduring love of Christ. Carrie and I are also having to learn how to trust the Lord’s unfailing love, while facing our own failings in this situation. So, please, pray for us, too.

If you have any questions, please feel free to email me and Megan. If you are interested in teaching or serving, please contact us as well.

Berean Arrives Today

As this Youth Group arrives today, this weekend has turned into an Intensive. They will hear from Carrie and I, as we talk about the Lord’s work through Highland & Truth Spring. They will hear from Billy all about the tremendous work that MercyMed is doing in the name of the Lord. They will eat lunch at the Food Mill. They will do service projects, including a Day-Camp Saturday Afternoon, from 2pm-4pm. Please contact us if you have any interest in your elementary-age children attending. They will then be attending Sunday’s service. Do what you can to connect with them when you see them, thanking them for coming.

Sunday Morning’s 10am Service

This Sunday, I have the privilege of facilitating us in corporate worship – one of the richest blessings of my life! I will also be preaching. We will continue through our Spiritual Warfare series. Last Sunday, we looked at how God’s Word directs us to recognize the work of the devil, especially in the nature and the teachings of others. This Sunday, we will continue to look closely at 1st Timothy 4:1-5, but the latter half of the passage. Bring your Bibles and continue to let God’s Word direct our hearts, Highland.

Our Weekly Update

To any and all who helped host St. Andrews, thank you! The students absolutely loved coming to Highland and serving. I am grateful to you, Highland, for opening your hearts and arms to welcome them. To those who shared devotions or testimonies, brought supplies or oversaw them throughout Community Work Projects, thank you! You are appreciated.

Church of the highlands serves at highland

We welcome Church of the Highlands on site. They will be painting in the interior walls of our red-brick sanctuary. Thankful to them for coming alongside us! If you’re around the neighborhood, stop by and thank them! They begin at 8:15am this Saturday.

As we begin a new school semester, Truth Spring Trade School will make their home in this space. Having Truth Spring Trade School on our home turf is such an exciting development for us! M2540 could not have been more hospitable (TSTS has been hosted there the last two years) but we certainly know they have purposes for their space, too. Our parternship for the name of Jesus being exalted will continue, though!

Berean bible church here July 26th-28th

July 26th-28th, we will host a youth group from Atlanta – Berean Bible Church. They will come to serve, but will also stay overnight in our gym. Let’s all rally around them, as they come to serve. Let’s make them feel at home. Perhaps stop by and play some pickle ball with them, or bring them some snack-food? What teen doesn’t love snack food!

highland cafe update

Speaking of snack food, our Highland Cafe continues to see more and more visitors! Any support would be appreciated. From pastries, to bottled water, to K-cups. Even more importantly, it’s an outpost for ministry. As our cafe door is open wide with a welcome from Jesus Christ, leaders from our church are praying with those who come through! Christ is being proclaimed! Thanks to all who’ve stepped up and gotten involved.

sunday’s service, 10am

During this upcoming Sunday’s service, we have the privilege of witnessing Charlotte Scarborough’s public profession declaring Christ as Lord! Immediately following our service, we will all proceed to our lawn where we will witness her baptism. What a delight to share in this momentous occasion within Charlotte's life, Highland. Come, rejoice with us, along with the heavens!
