“You have heard that it was said to those of old, You shall not murder; and whoever murders will be liable to judgment.’ But I say to you that everyone who is angry with his brother will be liable to judgment; whoever insults his brother will be liable to the council; and whoever says, ‘You fool!’ will be liable to the hell of fire. So if you are offering your gift at the altar and there remember that your brother has something against you, leave your gift there before the altar and go. First be reconciled to your brother, and then come and offer your gift. Come to terms quickly with your accuser while you are going with him to court, lest your accuser hand you over to the judge, and the judge to the guard, and you be put in prison. Truly, I say to you, you will never get out until you have paid the last penny. “You have heard that it was said, You shall not commit adultery.’ But I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman with lustful intent has already committed adultery with her in his heart. If your right eye causes you to sin, tear it out and throw it away. For it is better that you lose one of your members than that your whole body be thrown into hell. And if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away. For it is better that you lose one of your members than that your whole body go into hell.”
— Matthew 5:21-30, ESV

our series through matthew

Last Sunday’s Text — Matthew 5:21-30, ESV

Last Sunday’s sermon garnered a great deal of feedback! Thank each of you for your insight regarding our series through Matthew! I appreciate you taking the time to reach out and discuss Scripture with me.

In this portion of the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus accentuates the severity of our sinful nature. Moving beneath our actions, He addresses the attitude of our sinful hearts. Hovering a magnifying glass over the Mosaic Law, Jesus peers into our hearts! Beneath the act of murder or adultery, are hearts that are fueled by anger and lust, to which Jesus points out as being offensive to the holy nature of God and deserving of hell.

It’s here, though, that we must recall how the Sermon on the Mount begins, Highland. Opening the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus says: “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.” I offer that “Poor in Spirit” is Jesus’ description of a repentant heart.

As one who, under the weight of sin (in this case: anger or lust) encounters the holiness of God, those who repent come face-to-face with their own spiritual poverty. They acknowledge their helpless estate and their inability to overcome their sinful nature. In that same encounter, those who repent, while feeling the shame of their sin, and feeling the deep emptiness of their own spiritual poverty, turn their hearts toward Christ and receive salvation and renewal.

In this convicting moment (over anger or lust), instead of receiving judgment and criticism, those who repent receive mercy and forgiveness. Not only are those who repent forgiven, but heirs – “for theirs is the Kingdom of Heaven.” A heart that belongs to the Kingdom of heaven is a heart that is keenly aware of their spiritual poverty, rejoicing all the more in Christs’ riches in becoming a son or daughter of the most High God, with a humble heart.

In describing “poor in spirit” – Spurgeon borrows from a puritan who says: The person that is poor in spirit is a Christ-admirer; he has high thoughts of Christ, he sets a high value and appreciation on Christ, he hides himself in Christ’s wounds, he bathes himself in his blood, he wraps himself in his robe; he sees a spiritual famine at home, but he looks to Christ and he cries: ‘Lord, show me thyself’, and it suffices.

In summary, when consumed with anger or lust, those who hide themselves in Christ’s wounds, bathe themselves in Christ’s blood, wrap themselves in His robe - find a feast of mercy and forgiveness. Last week’s sermon is available online. To listen, check out our audio page.

Sunday Morning Services start at 10am. You are welcome.

he FORTIFIES us in our frailties

“Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words. And he who searches hearts knows what is the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints according to the will of God” (Romans 8:26-27).

The Lord proves faithful! Oh, may we continue to cast our concerns upon His enduring and gracious shoulders! Our family has experienced the provision of the Lord in such an abounding way recently – oh, how I rejoice!! All glory to His great name!

Confidently waiting on the Lord, Highland, results in our hearts being empowered by the strength of His Spirit. It’s tricky, because in our waiting, we often sharply feel our weaknesses, yet, when we entrust Him in the middle of our frailties, His strength is perfected in our weaknesses! Incredible!

Even in feeling our infirmities and weaknesses, as we hold fast to Him, the Holy Spirit’s strength overrides our frailties, even in the depths of our being! We then find a fortitude that’s not our own. We can press on in His will, realizing His purposes for us – especially through our darkest days!

Myself & Mr. Page

Nancy’s Father, Mr. Lynn Page, Has Passed Away

As I write about how the Lord fortifies us in our weaknesses, the Sheek family comes to mind. Nancy has lost her father, Mr. Lynn Page. Not only was he a man who loved and served Highland Community Church, he was a man who had a tremendous impact upon my life. Mr. Page was an actual conversationalist. He was a man that actually spoke his thoughts clearly and wanted to hear your thoughts about a matter. He paid attention to detail and, when presented with problems, he always wanted to work toward solutions!

Oh, how I loved him! My last conversation on the phone with him was one in which I was able to express my abounding appreciation for him! So thankful that the Lord afforded us that moment! Nancy, know that Highland is rallying around you and your family in love, prayer and in support right now. Call on us if you need us, please. Know that we love you and your family, Nancy.

our series through matthew

Last Sunday, we walked through what Jesus means in describing that those who come to repentance are to be salt and light in this world. This quote offers a solid framework to recapture last week’s sermon:

“The glory of the gospel is when the church is absolutely different from the world, she invariably attracts it. It is then that the world is made to listen to her message, though it may hate it at first.”

– Martin Lloyd-Jones

Do Not Worry — Because He Cares!

I hope you are enjoying this wonderful weather! Our family had a bustling week – including selling a car, buying a car, then returning a car! It was a lemon! Not 24 hours after purchasing it, the car began to sputter while we were in the middle of the road! We had a 5 day return-policy – we returned it (It’s Tuesday — typing this update from the dealership as I am returning)! Whew! The search for a new-to-us car now continues. In the meantime, we continue to have our trusty ol’ 4Runner. Nearly 300,000 miles and still going strong! How faithful the Lord’s provision remains, especially through the unexpected turns of our lives! Cast your cares upon Him, Highland – He cares for you.

***Update — We Got a car!***

A 2019 Toyota Highlander on sweet deal — yeah! He cares for us, Highland. We got it Thursday.

Last Sunday’s sermon is invaluable to me, personally. For many years, I have sought the Lord to fully understand repentance and how our relationship with a holy God actually intertwines. In studying for this series, especially last week, I have come away with a fresher and richer understanding of repentance. Becoming “poor in spirit” is the key ingredient. As I continue to remain before the Lord, I remain between two matters for the sermon this Sunday. Be praying for me as I ask the Lord to reveal His plans regarding the direction we should take. As I continue to ask the Lord for direction, He always makes known to me His plans! Always!! So, I am confident in Him; I just want to listen attentively and follow His lead. Pray that I get myself out of the way, that He may increase. Sermons in this series are available on our audio page.

Sunday School Sessions Start This Sunday

Sunday School Sessions begin this Sunday, 9am. Let us continue to deepen our commitment to serve together and to study together. To do results in an ever-deepening love for Scripture and for one another, Highland. This is our main roadway to going deeper.

As I mentioned Sunday, Cathy Crowder is leading our Women’s Bible Study. I actually forgot to read aloud her statement regarding her class. So, allow me to share with you now:

In 2025 our pastor has challenged us to go deeper with God. We do that every Sunday by gathering together in this place to worship Him! We also do that during the week by going to Him in prayer and in reading our Bibles each day! Some Christians call this their daily “quiet time” or their daily “devotions” or their “prayer time” or their “Bible time”! Whatever we call it, the point is that we WANT to meet with our God, to spend time with Him, to hear from Him, and to grow closer to Him! Oftentimes we find that this is not easy to do, and we struggle with our daily time with Him! In this class we are going to study practical ways to do that! We are going to look at the life of Jesus and see how He stayed connected to His Father while He was on the earth. No matter where you are in your spiritual journey, I believe this study can help us all to grow deeper with our Lord. The title of the book is: “A Place of Quiet Rest – Finding Intimacy with God through a Daily Devotional Life”, by Nancy Leigh DeMoss.

Ladies, I am so excited to learn and grow with you this semester!

— Cathy Crowder

How Cool is This Pic?!? — Mike’s class will take place here.

We’re in Matthew 5 this Sunday — The Sermon on the Mount

our series through matthew

We begin the Sermon on the Mount this Sunday, Highland. In coming to know Christ many years ago, this passage of Scripture pierced my calloused-heart, causing it to live, to feel, to long for the Lord to change my heart. Oh, Highland, may we cherish these words together this Sunday, as we open together the Sermon on the Mount.

baffled by my own blunder

Highland,

What a blunder! Last Sunday’s sermon was clearly going so well (in my mind)! My glaring typo in the slide defining the gospel was evident to everyone but to me! How did I miss it?!? Mistyped and misread – oh, the misrepresentation led me to wincing when I learned about it! Clearly, these sermons are not A.I. generated. They are written with a humble heart, a hunger for righteousness, to include human error.

Ah, though, the grace found in “the recap” to flawed preachers like myself tastes like sweet redemption right now as I write to you. As many of you know, though, Madison Montgomery creates our slide deck for worship each week – she does a great job! She does not do sermon slides. However, during the service, she was attempting to make the edit for me, mid-service! Madison, you’re so thoughtful and sharp! Thanks for being there and for coming to my rescue.

What I intended to say is that, when we are submitted to the Lordship of Jesus, our hearts experience acceptance in the arms of our Heavenly Father. This new identity we have in Christ compels us to obey! We are made new according to the holiness of God and our hearts are delighted to willingly share in His holy nature! More to come on this point Sunday.

our series through matthew

As we continue through our series this Sunday, we will be in the latter half of chapter four. Jesus now proceeds into ministry displaying authority over heaven and earth. Bearing Heaven’s acceptance, Jesus has come through the waters of baptism. Encountering the tempter in the wilderness, Jesus is not dismayed. He walks through the valley of the shadow of death in an emboldened obedience!

Now, fortified in His God-given identity, He declares the coming of the Kingdom of Heaven is near! What does that mean? How should we understand this declaration and how should we respond? These are some of the questions we will tackle this week.

our SUNDAY MORNING SCHEDULE

  • 8am: Doors open

  • 8:30–10:00: Coffee & Conversation & Devotion in our Dining Facility

Our Sunday School Class Schedule will begin January 26th. We will run classes ten weeks. First, to those who are leading, thank you! How grateful I am for your willingness to serve one another, as we study God’s Word together! This Sunday, you will have the opportunity to learn more about some of our adult classes. Mike Hare and Cathy Crowder will be leading a class this semester. You will hear from them. You will also be afforded the opportunity to sign up to attend or to serve this go-round.
