Continuing through Matthew
As we continue to journey through the Gospel of Matthew, it is my hope that we continue to savor the beauty of the heart of Christ together! In reflecting upon last Sunday’s sermon, Jesus’ desire for mercy is a directive unto us all. He instructs us to consider our own sinful hearts and, in light of the Holy Spirit’s conviction, know our deep need for mercy.
Charles Spurgeon greatly elaborates upon points from last Sunday’s sermon. In light of coming face-to-face with our sinful-condition by way of the Holy Spirit’s conviction, Spurgeon refers to recognizing our need for mercy as being “poor in spirit.” In praying for the hard-hearted, he writes: “I know no greater mercy in that they might be blessed with spiritual poverty, that they might be made to feel how poor they are. For they will never know Christ and they will never rise to be practically merciful themselves till first they see their own true condition and have obtained mercy enough to lie down at the foot of the cross, and there, with a broken heart, confess that they are empty and poor.” So good!
We sought to learn what Jesus meant when he said: “I desire mercy, not sacrifice.” In closing, we placed a magnifying-glass over the word, mercy, making these points:
To desire mercy is to look at our heart.
To desire mercy means that we desire the Lord, Himself, because He is merciful.
In seeing the condition of our sinful hearts, then calling out to the Lord for mercy, we find our greatest delight is in being near Him! In being parched, aching in thirst, when someone gives us a drink of water, we savor every sip, taking refuge in the One who offered us the cup.
As we have received mercy, our aching hearts are calmed! We then are transformed by the Giver of mercy, only wanting to impart what mercy we have received unto all, that all may be comforted in His mercy. Highland, let us comfort others in mercy, as we are merely recipients of the Lord’s mercy. Feel free to listen — click here.
