Continuing through Matthew

Throughout chapter nine, Jesus declares Himself to be the Son of Man when He is speaking to the Scribes. As we work through the text, Matthew then gives us a glimpse into seeing how Jesus will forge this new covenant, forming a new dominion (as the Son of Man is understood to do). He will establish this new dominion in His own body and in His own blood.

In looking at this declaration, Jesus makes known to us that He’s not come to abolish the law, He has come to fulfill the law and the prophets. This small detail is very important. Let’s look back at Jesus’ statement in the Sermon on the Mount.

“Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them. For truly, I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not an iota, not a dot, will pass from the Law until all is accomplished.”

— Matthew 5:17-18

We continue to see that Jesus will meld together the law & the prophets in His ministry; thereby, in His own blood, satisfying the wrath of God. Anyone, therefore, who repents of their sin, declaring Jesus to be Lord will know salvation from the wrath of God through Jesus.

In Matthew 9:18-34, Jesus encounters and ministers to the Distinguished, the Destitute, the Demon Oppressed. As we started unpacking this passage last Sunday, we will continue through this text this upcoming Sunday, moving toward the tenth chapter. To listen to sermons in our series — click here.

book of REMEMBRANCE — 20 years

October marks twenty years of Highland Community Church’s existence. Originally a plant of Edgewood Baptist Church, we have seen the Lord establish His purposes in us. May we both continue to exist to know Christ as Lord, and to make Him known to those around us, throughout our days.

To commend this occasion, we invite you to complete an entry in our Book of Remembrance. By clicking here, you access our form, completing your entry. We hope to compile them, offering all a chance to see how the Lord is at work in our lives. We welcome your participation.
