Details for our service This Sunday

God's Kingdom is on the move in North Highland, and also throughout the world! During our service this Sunday, we will celebrate the good things God is doing around the world: David Klaus will walk us through 2 Corinthians as we study the connection that the early church saw between local ministry and global missions. And he and Kimberly will share some stories and insight into the current state of global missions (the hard, the glorious,and the super-glorious!) Come ready to be challenged and inspired to think about how a global God can use His people to change the world, even from Columbus.

Myanmar Comes To Columbus!

On December 6, David Klaus will host a special event to tell stories from his recent trip to Myanmar, including stories of amazing miracles, courageous witness, and the good news beginning to spread like never before in history. David will also talk about practical ways that all of us can stay engaged with global missions in Southeast Asia even from Columbus. Giving Thanks to The Lord With Our Whole Heart!


While at a retreat, this liturgy was presented to me. I really identified with it, Highland. I found it fitting to share with you, especially in light of it being Thanksgiving! I hope you enjoy it as much as I do!

“I will give thanks to the LORD with my whole heart;

I will recount all of your wonderful deeds.

I will be glad and exult in you;

I will sing praise to your name, O Most High” (Psalm 9:1-2).

“God, I present my heart to you. I feel grateful. I feel it in my bones.

Fear can quietly slither under the door of my thankfulness. Pride can also reach around me, like my own hand, patting me on my back.

I pay attention to the places where my soul bends, twists and maneuvers away from the purity of my gratitude. I hold my feelings of gratitude the way I hold something special; like holding a baby, I won’t be reckless or distracted. I don’t tighten my grip or loosen it too much.

I honor the gifts You have given me, God. “Every good and perfect gift is from above coming down from the Father of lights, with Whom there is no variation or shadow.” I have been given so much.

I hold every single gift with gentle surrender. I open my hands. Thankfulness is on my lips. With all my heart, I give thanks to You, Lord. I sing my praise, speak my joy, shout my delight. I will let gratitude be gravity that grounds me in my life.

My thankfulness can exist alongside any feeling.

Anxiety—Gratitude

Sandness—Gratitude

Worry—Gratitude

Confusion—Gratitude

No feeling can cancel my thankfulness, because, Lord, Your gifts are present in all things. God, the greatest gift You have for my life is to love me. Thanks for Making our Feast Possible!

Highland, wow – what an incredible day of corporate worship! To those who helped with the Agape Feast, thank you! How I love seeing us come together, serving one another, in honor of the Lord. Well done, everyone!

Also, I will savor the sharing in the baptism of Vivian and Asa Lynch. May they both continue to walk in the newness of life - afforded only in the name of Christ Jesus. May we all celebrate with the Lynch Family, along with the heavens, Highland.

Darrack’s Memorial Service

This Saturday at 11am, Darrack’s Memorial Service will be here, at Highland Community Church. As you arrive, be aware that Highland is also partnering with M2540 this Saturday. They will be offering Thanksgiving Lunches to our community. They will provide live worship throughout the event. The band will play from our gym, facing 6th avenue, through our 6th Ave garage door. How thankful I am for this incredible facility the Lord’s provided for us! This building allows us to the chance to worship and mourn together, at the same time — thank you, Lord.

Weekly Update

‘Saved By His Life’

Just a few Sundays ago, Darrick and I had coffee. He had never before asked to meet with me. He wanted to know if the Lord could save someone like him. In response, I read to him: “For if while we were enemies we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, now that we are reconciled, shall we be saved by his life” (Romans 5:10).

Highland, as he asked me this question, he was tense. When I read this passage to him, I watched the peace of God wash over him. His face beamed with joy. I will never forget that look dawn upon his face! We, together, celebrated salvation in the name of Jesus — who saves repentant sinners!

Highland, well done! Way to set up an outpost for the Kingdom of God amid the streets of North Highland. We maintain our resolve, holding our position in the light of Christ, that all who walk in darkness might see the marvelous light of Christ Jesus and come running!

The streets of North Highland lost a dear neighbor and friend on Wednesday.

I had the privilege of knowing Darrick for the last several years of his life. I (along with many of you) got to watch God transform Darrick before our very eyes- from once walking in darkness to walking in the light. I often told him I could see this light in his eyes! He radiated joy since coming to Christ.

He told me one day in the Highland cafe, where he so faithfully served our church, that he felt that God had given him many opportunities to come to Him. It wasn’t until he had a medical complication and lost his foot that He finally surrendered his life to Christ. I’ll never forget him looking up, smiling, and saying “Better to go into Heaven with one foot than with two feet into hell!”

Highland, may God give us wisdom, as he did to Darrick, to “number our days” and know what is truly important in the eyes of the Lord. Darrick talked often about all of the love he received from so many people at Highland- may this be an encouragement to press on, loving anyone God sends our way.

Darrick faithfully served our church and the streets every day in the Highland cafe, and was always willing to help anyone in any way. We rejoice that Darrick has entered life, but His presence here will be DEEPLY missed.

As we pause today, to thank the Lord for this great country and to honor our heroes, let us all rejoice in what we have been given by the bountiful hand of our Lord — both the right to live in America and for the brave soldiers who defend our rights.

a quick glance back

Over the last two Sundays, we have laid the groundwork for deepening the understanding our vision. In particular, last Sunday, Carrie and I revisited the working relationship between Highland and Truth Spring.

We also consider ways that we all can serve one another, here, in the life of Highland Community Church. The audio of our service from last week has been posted. Feel free to give it a listen. Click here to access the audio.

It’s likely that we will also hear from others who are leading in and around the life of Highland. These opportunities to all huddle around the Lord’s work, applying our hearts and hands to help, afford us the chance to grow, in Christ, together!

A few weeks ago, we concluded chapter ten of the Gospel of Matthew Series. We take a brief reprieve from our series. We will revisit our vision, savoring the Lord’s future and hope for us this Sunday. We will resume our series soon, picking up in chapter 11.

I am sorry to say that our service last week was not recorded. During our sermon from last week, I simply shared my heart for our church. Reflecting upon the faithfulness of the Lord throughout this month has been meaningful. Yet, in shepherding Highland, it is incumbent of me to help convey how we are to steward “the future and the hope” the Lord’s entrusted unto us. Therefore, I hope offering this summation of what was preached might be helpful. See below:

Highland Belongs to the Lord

“There are two characteristics I want us to continue to cultivate. In part, we could draw from the end of Matthew, chapter ten, that, as His disciple, even giving a child a cup of cold water delights the heart of the Lord.

I want us to be defined as a people who have an insatiable hunger in our hearts for the holiness of our Lord and a hand that is willingly generous for His glory.

Our hearts, Highland, must delight in being holy as He is holy. That meaning, that we must abhor sin, detesting even the hint of offending the holy nature of our Lord Almighty (1st Peter 1:13-16).

Highland, belonging to the Lord results in us becoming a people who delight in sharing in His holy nature. Paul describes this as that we become imitators of our Lord ( Ephesians 5:1-10).

So, there’s the first trait defining our sense of belonging – that we have hearts taking up residence in the holy nature of our Lord. The second trait of belonging to the Lord is that we are joyously generous.

As the Lord has offered us in our despair His hand of mercy, rescuing us, so we must continue to open our hands, generously, as a church. As we belong to the Lord, our giving is not our cause; as His disciple, the Lord’s glory is our cause.

As we pause, considering the abundant goodness of the Lord unto us, Highland, let us continue to be considerate to the poor, as Daniel read from Psalm 41 Sunday morning.

Therefore, belonging to the Lord means that, throughout the life of Highland, we become holy as He is holy, holding our hand as a church, imparting to those in need, generously.”

We continue, Highland, to consider how the Lord has fashioned us and how we can all put our hands to the plow accordingly this Sunday. See you then!

a moment to remember

Highland,

Celebrating with you the Lord’s faithfulness to us was such a memorable occasion last Sunday! The Lord has established a people for His name at Highland; may purposes prevail in us!

As we conclude the month of October this Sunday, I will take this service to place our vision before us, Highland. We will spend time reflecting upon who the Lord has positioned us to be, while taking a present account of the life of Highland. We will also take time to consider the future, asking the Lord to make us a people who long for His holiness, yielding Holy-Spirit-flavored fruits!

I hope you enjoyed the meal! Cross Pointe’s team went above and beyond to prepare us a feast! Leaders of Highland have already offered a thoughtful response. However, their love for us remains even still, as they served us so generously!

Finally, Highland, my joy over you is steadfast. A person who attends Highland said to me after the service that there's clearly a history at Highland – the roots were made evident in Sunday’s Service. I savor that statement because only the Lord could have made Highland a reality – all glory to His name. Know that I am grateful for you! For your faithfulness in giving, in serving, in being part of the Lord’s work here, at Highland. Thank you!

let’s celebrate the lord’s Faithfulness together

Highland,

We celebrate twenty years of the Lord’s goodness this Sunday. Join us, as we reflect upon the faithfulness of the Lord, while we also invoke His blessing upon our future. Our service begins at 10am.

Immediately following our 10am service, we will enjoy a meal together on our grounds. Considering that the weather will be agreeable, bring a blanket or a lawn chair, making plans to enjoy being together over a delicious meal.

By the way, I want to thank those from CrossPointe who are coming together to serve us this Sunday. Such a hospitable gesture – thank you! Affording us the chance just to be together is such a gift, we appreciate you!

Last Sunday, we concluded chapter ten of the Gospel of Matthew Series. We take a brief reprieve from our series this Sunday. We will pause to thank the Lord for His devoted, unwavering faithfulness unto us.

This passage from 1st Chronicles 16, when Asaph and his family were dedicating the placement of the Ark of God in the Tent, has been resonating with me this week:

“Oh give thanks to the LORD; call upon his name;

make known his deeds among the peoples!

Sing to him, sing praises to him;

tell of all his wondrous works!

Glory in his holy name;

let the hearts of those who seek the LORD rejoice!

Seek the LORD and his strength;

seek his presence continually!”

1st Chronicles 16:8-11

Highland, this passage sums up our plan for Sunday’s service. May we continue to seek the Lord and His strength, humbled before His presence. We will resume our series through Matthew very soon.
