Continuing through Matthew

We concluded chapter eight in our series through Matthew last Sunday. In chapter eight, Matthew describes the crowds’ response to the Sermon on the Mount as being that they were astonished because Jesus taught as with one who has authority.

This is a monumental moment in the Gospel of Matthew. Jesus could have taken this moment and built his entourage right here! As a matter of fact, it was customary for rabbis to cultivate a following, leveraging influence to fuel their agendas. So, we find ourselves in the middle of this moment in the life of Jesus. Bearing authority of Heaven & Earth: What will Jesus do with His authority? Instead of building His entourage, Jesus ‘empties Himself’ (Philippians 2). He takes on the form of a servant, honoring His Father’s Name by ministering to:

  • The Outcasts (Matthew 8:1-4)

  • The Outsiders (Matthew 8: 5-13)

  • The Oppressed (Matthew 8:14-17)

The latter half of chapter eight affords us the opportunity to see how many will respond to the authority of Jesus. Thereby, we are also challenged, asking ourselves how we respond to the authority in His Name. These two questions, borrowed from N.T. Wright’s commentary, serve as a probe for our hearts:

  • Do we actually treat Jesus as if He has authority over every aspect of our lives?

  • Are we living in such a way that, even in the confrontation of evil, that others say of us – ‘what sort of people can they be?

Sermons are available to listen through the last three weeks, in which we covered chapter eight of Matthew. Feel free to listen — click here. This Sunday, we break open chapter nine together. Looking forward to seeing you Sunday!

thank you, Highland!

Highland – Truth Spring is privileged to have begun another academic year! The fact that we get to welcome our neighbors to be part of both Truth Spring Academy and Truth Spring Trade School would not be possible without your hospitality, Highland. Please continue to pray for us, as we direct students’ hearts toward the love and power of Jesus! Also, pray for Truth Spring’s leadership – that we may carry the name of the Lord honorably.

unique glimpse of the beauty of the heart of christ

Highland,

Last Sunday, we reignited our series through Matthew. We started in chapter 8, which offers us a telling-glimpse into the beauty of the heart of Christ. Bearing the endorsement of heaven, then receiving the acclaim of the crowds at the conclusion of the Sermon on the Mount, he’s afforded the opportunity to build his brand, establish his entourage.

Rather than doing either, Matthew tells us in chapter eight that he comes down from the mountain and he reaches out to the outcasts, the outsiders and the oppressed. Jesus empties himself of his own agenda. Instead, he pursues the glory of His father and the good of those that he encounters.

The beauty of the heart of Christ reveals itself in the laying down of self, in order to lift up the name of His heavenly Father! The sermon is available through our website; please feel free to check out our audio page to hear it.

Weekly Update

Last Sunday’s service

Last Sunday’s Service was such a meaningful time in the life of our church! From Justin Shorey doing a terrific job leading worship, to Jack professing Jesus as Lord, to holding the Lord’s Supper together, then wrapping up with the Agape Feast! Clearly, the Holy Spirit’s conviction and council fashioned our time together, Highland!

As I mentioned during Communion, I have been personally working through Psalm 37. David writes this Psalm in a reflective-tone, hence, it’s believed to be written in the last laps of his life. In this Psalm, we read:

“The steps of a man are established by the LORD, when he delights in His way; though he fall, he shall not be cast headlong, for the LORD upholds his hand” (Psalm 37:23-24).

We brought to light the fact that Jesus’ steps were established by the Lord, as He delighted in the way of His Father! This highlights for us the beauty of the heart of Christ – that Jesus, even though He hung on a cross, delighted within and obeyed the will of His Father! I just marvel at the sacrificial love of Jesus!

Highland, in delighting to do the will of His Father, we see an outpouring of the abounding glory Jesus puts on display for His Father! We also, at the same time, witness the imparting of a ceaseless and redeeming love to those who repent! Oh, the beauty of the heart of Christ!! This lyric comes to mind in which we often sing: “The radiance of God in person; beyond all human explanation; once invisible, now a visible God; oh, Jesus Christ, Lord of all” (Shane & Shane).

Those who yield to Christ as Lord thereby receive the Holy Spirit, which inscribes the law of God’s love into our hearts! Those who abide within the Holy Spirit’s conviction and council that’s inscribed into our hearts will not fall, nor be cast headlong! Rather, we, too, know the Lord's upholding-hand throughout every season of our lives! Allow me to challenge us here: may we, Highland, delight in His way!

This hymn by Joseph Gilmore has always been one I cherish. It’s called “He Leadeth Me.” This verse really resonates with this passage from Psalm 37 we’re glancing at together: “Lord, I would clasp thy hand in mine, nor ever murmur nor repine; content, whatever lot I see, since 'tis my God that leadeth me.” In closing, my request of the Lord is: “Lord, shepherd us. Give us hearts that delight in following your lead, in honoring your commands.”

Summer Mission’s Group from Berean Bible Church

Summer mission Groups wrap up!

Highland,

We have been so enriched by the devoted service and abounding love of our Summer Mission’s Teams! Berean Bible Church ignited the Kingdom-Work, then St. Andrews brought it home!

Reflecting back to last Sunday – thank you, Highland, for being willing to be so welcoming and hospitable! Both Berean and St. Andrews felt incredibly welcomed and loved.

There was also a great deal of appreciative feedback from you regarding the joint-services! From testimonies, to corporate worship, to Jamie’s sermon. I’m so proud of us, Highland, for opening our doors and our hearts to everyone who came to serve.

Throughout the week, groups completed Community Work Projects, facilitated Kid’s Club, lost to Lawson Holbrook and me in Pickle Ball and much more! They learned about Truth Spring, Mercy Med & enjoyed a walking-tour of North Highland! When God’s people are unified, He is glorified.

Happy independence Day, Highland!

Happy Fourth of July, Highland. I hope that you and your family are able to gather and celebrate the opportunity to live in a country that continues to promote freedom. Above (and in the original post if you’re reading this through email) check out one of my favorite singers singing one of my favorite songs in honor of America.

This verse in the song, America The Beautiful, offers such a celebration of our nation. See below:

“O beautiful for heroes proved In liberating strife,

Who more than self their country love And mercy more than life! America! America!

May God thy gold refine Till all success be nobleness, And every gain divine!”

Soaking up Some North Carolina Sun!

Settling into Summer

As we settle into summer, I hope everyone’s able to enjoy the long, sunny days. Our family’s sure soaking up the sun. I cannot recall the last time we have been gone two Sundays in a row! However, all the reports I have received is that Highland’s services have been rooted in the strength and grace of our Lord.

We are continually resonating with this truth Paul writes: “"We ought always to give thanks to God for you, brethren, as is only fitting, because your faith is greatly enlarged, and the love of each one of you toward one another grows ever greater.” (2nd Thessalonians 1:3, NASB).

While I would never make missing multiple weeks a practice, this is actually a mark of our maturity, Highland. May our roots continue to grow deeper, as our love for the Lord and for each other abounds! To those who served in any and every capacity, thank you! Thank you for all you do! The health of Highland would not be possible without you.

Luke’s the Human Claw!

our trip to orlando

Highland,

Our family had such a joyous vacation in Orlando. We spent some time soaking up some rays and making terrific memories! While there were many highlights, seeing these kiddos become “The Claw” was among the top! The kiddos in our family love this game! Seeing them become “The Claw” took the experience to an entirely new level!

It’s game time!

We also loaded up on pizza and junk food while we watched The College World Series. We all cram into the condo and watch the “Greatest Show on Dirt.” Always lots of fun! Every good vacation ends with coming home, though. Our family got back Monday and we got back into the swing of things. One of the richest blessings is that I get to do work that I am thankful to get back to doing! Humbled beyond words to serve as Pastor of Highland Community Church.

I will take her for ice cream anytime!

As our children are getting older and becoming more independent, Carrie and I are finding a few more moments to capture being together. Ice cream dates are some of our favorite ways to spend this newly discovered time together! It really is the little things – they add up to mean so, so much! Paul instructs Timothy this way regarding this very matter: “But godliness with contentment is great gain, for we brought nothing into the world, and we cannot take anything out of the world. But if we have food and clothing, with these we will be content” (1st Timothy 6:6-8). Highland, let us prize and savor “godliness with contentment.”

Noah’s on Summer Staff @ Snowbird!

noah’s at snowbird

One major emotional adjustment we had to make was that Noah, our eldest, was not with us on vacation this year. He’s serving on Snowbird’s Summer Staff. He’s facilitating small groups, discussing God’s Word with campers and also guiding them down the Nantalhala River! While we missed him, I am so proud of him! Super thrilled he’s pursuing a personal relationship with Jesus, while helping foster a hunger for God’s Word in the lives of these campers throughout the summer! I continue to ask the Lord to let Noah experience life-abundant in His relationship with Christ. It’s in Christ that life becomes an adventure - may Noah experience His presence to the fullest! I invite you to pay with me, Highland.
