Current Stance on Our Series Through Matthew

We broadened our view in our series through Matthew last Sunday. Perhaps it’s best described to say we’ve been walking a narrow trail while journeying through this last section of Matthew. Last Sunday, we reached the top of the mountain we’ve been traversing.  In so doing, we gained a broad outlook over the horizon of the New Testament.

When considering Jesus’ response to Peter and to His disciples, we have to allow Scripture to shape our outlook, even to Revelation, which is what we did Sunday’s Sermon. To those who prayed, thank you!  We are to be a House of Prayer.  Well done, everyone!

Furthermore, we have to maintain the correct perspective - that being that Jesus is the main character of Christianity, not us.  Let us, therefore, embolden our confession that: “Jesus is Lord.”  Let us do so with a driving hunger for holiness, which is found in the presence of His Holy Spirit.

Security in the Holy Spirit

Regarding the Holy Spirit, Jesus tells His disciples that it’s good that He goes (John16), that the Holy Spirit thereby comes, convicting the world of sin, righteousness and judgment. We must remain submissive and sensitive to the Holy Spirit’s convictions!  His counsel will guide us into all truth, Highland. His truth provides us the opportunity to know security in His presence.

By way of the Holy Spirit affording us a spirit-of-adoption, we know an unshakable sense-of-belonging. This is among God’s greatest gifts to the human heart, which is prone to wander and often falling prey to deceit.  As our hearts dwell securely with our Lord, they discover their home in the presence of the Lord.  Rest is the result for our ever-searching hearts; that rest is what our hearts are searching for – found in Him!

A line from the hymn “Blessed Assurance” always comes to mind when I consider this securing-rest the Lord gives to us as we submit to Him.

“Blessed assurance, perfect submission, all is at rest, I in my Savior am happy and blessed; watching and waiting, looking above, filled with His goodness, lost in His love.”

The hymn’s pointing to the fact that, when we are secure in the love of Christ, we have found what we’re all searching for in Christ – security, rest – gifts afforded to us in the Name of Jesus, alone!
